Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. For anyone who hasn’t been following, The BananaSplit 60 is a collaboration between me and Evan to provide the most versatile 60% keyboard without losing features. The main features are, 2 different styles of split-spacebar support, arrow key support, and other varying things like support for standard ANSI, ISO, HHKB style backspaces and stepped caps lock. The kits will come with the PCB itself, genuine cherry stabilizers and steel plates. To read more of the features go ahead and read through the first post on the geekhack page.
The groupbuy contains three options:
- ($100) The base kit will include: The PCB, Universal Stainless Steel Plate and Genuine Cherry Stabilizers (The stabilizer pack will include one 6.25u stabilizers and six 2u stabilizers).
- ($75) The barebones kit will include: The PCB, and Genuine Cherry Stabilizers.
- ($60) And finally we will offer just the PCB as an option.
