Good choice for mid-fi gaming and movies?

more_vert
Budget is up to around the 6xx, but Im looking at as many options as I can. Just not sure whats good out there atm. Most people when they say gaming they are mean competitive advantage. I'm not that interested in that, as I'll be playing more single player games. What I mean is that I don't really want anything too neutral and instead something with 'character', good crisp bass but accurate top end reproduction for dialogue. Something that makes a dramatic scene 'come alive' rather than a truly accurate reproduction. A wide soundscape would be nice but not too fussed about open or closed back if I can get the above critieria. Suggestions? Obviously quite subjective.

I'd love to help, but I have a few questions for you:
  1. Are you planning on running these out of an amp?
  2. Do you have a DAC?
And yes, I think the HD 6XX is a great choice pretty much irrespective of what your answers are above.

Totally fine starting point! The HD 6XX will be alright from the setup, but probably will be under-driven (keep in mind the impedance actually swings on dynamic driver headphones; on the HD 6XX this swing can go up to 500 ohms). However, if you decide to continue on in this hobby the HD 6XX will scale up to high end gear. If you want a similar headphone that's easier to drive, the HD58X is a worthy choice. Avoid planar magnetics like the HE-4XX. They demand tons of power and need a dedicated amp to sound good. There are also other good headphones; just can't think of them off the top of my head. Hope this helps!
