IvayloI just purchased the new Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro. Might be out of original poster's budget but they are incredible cans with great balance, resolution and clarity. Mid fi priced but easily compete with 1k cans.

KeeferI would not catagorize the Beyerdynamic 990 Pro with the Sennheiser HD650. the 990 are a very bright, incredibly fatiguing headphone with too much emphasis on the high frequencies. I bought them and within 4 days sold them to my coworker who is near-deaf and needed louder upper frequencies. The HD650 are glorious, if a bit warm-sounding. For reference, my main daily headphones are the HD598, and occasionally I'll listen to my DT770 Pro. I usually run them through my Dragonfly 1.2 DAC or my Roland Mobile UA.

KeeferFrom the point of view of the frequency response curves of the 990 vs 1990, it seems like there isn't that much difference. Headphone.com states: "The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro headphone design extends from the classic DT-990 model but with a modernized look and feel. The sound remains similar with an intensely pristine focus in the mids / highs" One reviewer writes: "Beyerdynamic has always been famous for a little bit extra treble energy and I have been referring to a boosted top-end as a Beyer-peak. Just as with the vocal presence peak, Beyerdynamic unsurprisingly did not shy away from 7-8 kHz and at times this can come across as a little sibilant." Which leads me to believe there is still a sharpness to the kids and highs.

IvayloDon't agree with this opinion. DT990 Pro has a MUCH brighter sound than the HD650. For me, the 990 is TOO bright. However if you prefer a more V-shaped response, then the 990 might be your choice.

bigjimYes. V shaped. Although its a very flat V as you do get good midrange. Way better bass thoug and to my ears with a tube amp better highs. Also senns are a little bit lazy. The 600 ohm 990 are a killer for 215 usd. At the end of the day it boils down to what you like. Maybe you like blonds maybe you like blacks and maybe you like both. All BBC radios and studios use beyerdynamic. They could have chosen any brand name yet for the musicians they have gone with beyer dt770. Does this matter? No. But then it kind of does :)

IvayloCool! I have never heard the DT770. WIll give it a try if I get the chance! Normally, though, diffuse field designs usually seem too bright to me. That's just me, of course!

KbeauAny elaboration? Do you own both? Have you done side-by-side comparisons? Which do you like more? Are the 1990 just as “bright” as the 990? What source and amp are you using? ...etc

JayEl32xI do and I have done an a/b. The highs on the dt1990 are much more controlled and bass is tighter.. the b pads add more more bass with smoother highs in contrast to the a pads keeping it neutral. I use the EL AMP and EL DAC. The 1990 blows the dt990 put of the water because of those lowered controlled highs etc etc
