I'll start by saying read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_formats Decide where & how you are going to play, since everyone's situation is different. You should start out with paper, if you have enough access to play with people in person, for instance friends for casual MtG or you live in a city that you can participate in official events (most often things like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_Night_Magic). Playing "digitally" is also an option, see this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_Online. But for getting started with paper MtG, you need a pool of cards from which to build "legal" decks according to a "meta" format as linked above. New players are most likely going to play Standard, which includes the most recent sets, which form the bulk of what you can buy at retail hobby shops. See here for chronological list of sets https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Magic:_The_Gathering_sets
Now as for buying paper MtG here on Massdrop, I've noticed a very wide variety of drops, some of which are what new players could use (like this active drop: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/hour-of-devastation-booster-box-fat-pack-preorder), and some are more tailored to collectors, or people playing less approachable meta formats like Vintage (like this recently ended drop: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/magic-the-gathering-4th-edition-starter-deck). Summarily, "booster packs" (36 of which come in booster boxes) form the basis of what players buy to obtain cards. Typically 15 cards come in a booster pack, with a minimum guaranteed common/uncommon/rare ratio. But you can always check out numerous online sources to buy singles (even ebay). I'll also recommend https://pucatrade.com/ here since it's a unique approach to obtaining paper cards. Good luck!

intergalacticDROPWow. A wealth of knowledge, thank you very much for taking the time to post. I have started to play the 2014 Digital game from steam to try and get some kind of game knowledge, it will be a process LOL. I have just picked up from a trader in my country 800 various cards mainly from booster packs (just for a look-see and to play around) for a grand cost of $15. I need to get a core set eventually and I hear the 2014 set is the better. Unfortunately there are no gaming stores in my town and no Friday Night Magic. I will need to look around and find a Club of some sort. I'm getting excited about learning.
