90% of the mechanical keyboards have no numeric pad... why ?

more_vert
I was just wondering.. I'm using the pad a lot and I can't understand why the majority of keyboards selling on Massdrop are not "pad-included". Is there a reason ?

I've never understood why a dedicated, symmetrically organized, compact collection of keys with easily identifiable positions and keyshape cues, designed for rapid, non-confusing, one-handed operation, separated from other keys to avoid clutter....stopped being viewed as the ideal place to control games, and WASD became viewed as the standard instead. Repetition of the "common wisdom" of WASD?

demalionFor keyboard and mouse gaming it's more ergonomically sound. Maybe if you have a 100% keyboard that places the numpad on the left which is rare, but they're out there.

It really depends on your tastes. You can get 100% keyboards from many places, so there seem to be less customs that use it.

cause the only reason for having a numpad is online banking xD
the keys used for the numpad are redundant but have a more suitable design for number Inputs. If you dont enter numbers a lot, you dont need it.

NoggiZenOr if you're into older games a lot of control schemes used to use it. But yes, it's mainly for data entry and it's absolutely invaluable for that.

NoggiZenOnly reason? Computer Networking comes in big time. Using a calculator? Ohhh yeah! Just to name a few. Banking hasn't even crossed my mind until this comment haha.

I never use it, so I prefer not to have it.

BlueCrownedI also type left handed almost exclusively, with my right hand taking care of enter, shift and backspace, my weird typing style means that the numpad is very much in the way.

Tenkey keyboards are way too wide for most people to comfortably use the left side of a keyboard and a mouse. So, for gaming and similar tasks, full size can be really bad for your shoulders. Plus you may find yourself bumping the mouse into the side of the keyboard a lot.
For just typing, it doesn't matter much, but if you want to be a really efficient typist it's better to learn layers so you don't have to move away from the home row (which is the most likely time to typo).

I guess that lots of people think the full size keyboard is a little large, like me I prefer NUMpad on the left then my mouse will have more space...

muni_changThis ^ is one of the best solutions. Separate numpad on left is a winner.

For the ultimate in compact, but with numpad check out all the 90% keyboards like the Kira. That seems to be the best of both worlds.

Multiple reasons. Portability is already mentioned a couple of time. Price is another. Desk real estate is a major factor, maybe the most significant reason. Whether you just need more room for paperwork or you're a serious gamer using 400 dpi - 800 dpi mouse, the smaller footprint keyboards are much more desirable.
It's easy to add a separate numpad for the days you need one.

I'm not sure I understand this, so I'm curious.
By 'trainer,' do you mean a piece of software that changes the difficulty of a game to make it easier, or run some automated process to cheat? If so, why is the numpad useful?

OracYes. That software. Trainer usually can only be activated using numpad key.

My keyboard isnt a cash register. I am not doing data entry.
Why would I need a numpad? I already have a row of numbers on my keyboard.

Interesting theory, but not borne out in reality, in my experience. See my other comment for more. Of course, YMMV.

PrototypeWell, because some of us use our keyboards for work. I'm a video editor and I need to enter timecode values all the time. I can't stand doing that on keyboards without a 10-key pad.
