Technical answer: yes. In simple terms, a transducer (in this case, headphones) has no idea what to do with a digital signal and requires an analogue signal. A DAC is a digital-to-analogue converter and does just that; it takes the digital bits coming from your files and converts it to analogue. Answer to the question you're actually asking: no, you do not need one since your iPad has one in the device. You can simply plug the iPad to the Objective 2 and then plug the HD58X into the Objective 2. It's honestly not a bad starting setup. On a side note, I don't think you'd see much, if any, benefit to adding a DAC for that setup. IMHO the Objective 2 is not revealing enough of source material to hear an audible difference.
You will hear great sound from that setup,, but limited to 16/48 pcm from the iPad specs I see, only an iPhone user, pad free. An external DAC with player software such as Audivarna will only be limited by the DAC, or the file resolution of course.
