Looking for budget headphones

more_vert
Ideally I want great sounding headphones for cheap (I'm a college student btw). I'm looking for something portable but also rugged because I am very rough with my tech (specifically with the cables). iems, Over-ears, any suggestions are very much appreciated :).

Try SuperLux or one of the Chinese IEM manufactures. Some great quality and fabulous sound can be had if you're willing to try something off the beaten path. Hell, I just heard a pair of $18 IEMs off Amazon that murdered some older Shure I had that cost $500. It's really remarkable how far some of these manufactures have come.

If you really cannot bear to part with >USD$10, go for either the XiaoMi Piston Basic Edition (in-ear) or the Venture Electronics Monk Plus (old school earphone style), both of which can be gotten at around $7 period.

Currently where I stay, the Sony MDR-100AAP are going for USD$110, which is quite a steal in my opinion. Personally I like my Noontec Zoro II HDs which I got for $30, but I fear you will lay waste to them; they are by no means durable!

For earphones, I suggest 1More 1M301 or Voice of China edition (around USD$23-29 in my country), Philips Fidelio S2 ($36) and the Fiio EX1 gen 2 ($83). For headphones you may like to check out the Audio Tecnica MSR7 ($170), which has good build quality and replaceable cables. I don't quite like its sonic balance though, despite it being technically competent. Depending on your preferences, you may be interested in the V-moda XS ($150), which I find a little too bassy and slow.

A couple of thoughts. If you want to go really cheap, look at Panasonic RP-HJE120. Under $10 all the time. I used them as beaters for several years before I started getting into higher end stuff. Recently went through my bin of old headphones to donate them and listened to them for the first time in quite a while. Was actually surprised at how good they sound, so I kept them. The other is Koss Porta Pros. I don't own them yet, but solid rep for budget sound and a lifetime warranty they seem to honor.
