sorry, 100 bucks just won't cut it. FPs are like wines, you're going to be willing to shell more for ones as your taste goes up. I'm not a wine drinker though, :)

Bailey2013This kind of brazen exclusionary attitude toward people who don't want to or can't spend over $100 on a pen has absolutely no place in the fountain pen community.

YummyTreeSapfeel free to toy with sub 100 FPs. Just my personal experience after playing with FPs with a price tag (much lower than MSRP though) ranging from 13 to 330. If only I could go back, I'd save up and go straight up to the high-end models. but you've gotta pay tuition for everything in life, though. Well, I do think FC loom is a phenomenal pen for the price, forget lamy safari and pilot metro (i do own all of them)

Bailey2013A question from a newbie to the FP world. How do you scope out a pen before buying? Do you visit a shop and write with it? Order by mail, try it and return? I'm trying to gain knowledge by reading, but seems like experience is the best way to know which pen to buy.

BonsoirOrdering and returning isn't a very nice thing to do. Stores are run by people just like us. You wouldn't like it if someone did that to you I'm sure. I personally watch as many reviews as possible and read as many reviews as possible. I also bought a bunch of cheap fountain pens to get a feel for them at first. Like how they feel, different weights in the hand, different materials and also different nib sizes. Most of the cheap ones are Jinhao's and I got them from Aliexpress, anywhere from 1-4 weeks to deliver. A great starter is the Pilot Metropolitan or the Platinum Preppy. Both are cheap and very good. There's also the Lamy Safari and the TWSBI Eco. Experience is definitely the best. Try to find local shops if you can. If you live in New York City, there's a place called Fountain Pen Hospital in lower Manhattan. I'm planning to head there one day. I'm also still in the beginner stages too but this is just my two cents.

TanvirK175Thanks for your input. It didn't seem to me that ordering/returning was an attractive moral choice and I'm glad to know it's not standard practice. So it's a bit of a treasure hunt. I'll keep an open list and try various shops as I travel. Thanks.

Bonsoiri'm a newbie myself, too. I read online reviews and follow some popular youtube channels. I have bought all my pens without testing them in store. Gotta buy/try some pens before you can figure out your preference. My advice is just not to buy too many pens of the same tier
