It looks like the only output you will get is Bluetooth as it is AD2P SRC not SNK ,so the best bet is a Bluetooth DAC, like the Blume recently here on MD,, ended though, https://www.massdrop.com/buy/auris-blume-bluetooth-music-receiveror and hook that in to your system or just a set of Bluetooth powered speakers. Not clear if you will get mono or stereo our of your AI spy friend Alexa; hope would be that that is stereo enabled. https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=202011820

rastusThanks for your reply.
I am not sure I understand the difference between AD2P SRC and SNK, but I did notice that the Echo has an 3.5mm audio out jack. Would it not be possible to connect that to a DAC/AMP? The setup I'm currently looking at from Monoprice does support Bluetooth, however.

JoeyRamoneNot sure I understand why you are throwing a DAC into the mix with the echo dot. Via 3.5mm stereo out the DAC section won't be used, trying to use a DAC to improve bluetooth also has questionable logic as the source will be significantly compressed prior to reaching the DAC. Bluetooth transmissions codecs with the exception of AptX HD and LDAC are at or below the 320kbps threshold. I see three routes for you:
1) Use the 3.5mm aux out to powered monitors 2) Use the bluetooth connection to a dongle or bluetooth capable stereo receiver with passive speakers (can also use the 3.5mm aux out via patch cable) 3) Use the bluetooth connection directly to a set of powered monitors that accept bluetooth
If the Dot will be your only source then I would go with #1, if you have other things to connect I would go with #2. If you hate wires and have other bluetooth sources I would go #3

JoeyRamoneSorry,, did not see that it was a 'dot', so yes with the 3.5 mm out you can use this as an input for almost anything. Just get a 3.5mm to RCA splitter cable to your system-amp, or a 3.5mm extension to a powered speaker that accepts same. Though I am going to take a wild guess that whatever DAC is in the 'dot' is not anything to write home about, and you are not pursuing the road to audio happiness here... but you can "converse" with "it"...

rastusThanks for the suggestions; between you and ElectronicVices' advice I'm thinking going straight to powered speakers is the best option. I was looking at the DAC/AMP simply because I do want to listen to music and was thinking the extra power would be nice.

ElectronicVicesOk, your first two suggestions sound like the way to go. I do want decent quality sound out of it for listening to music but I can always plug a bluetooth dongle on my stereo receiver if I want to crank it up a bit. I was looking at the DAC/AMP for the external speakers while listening to music, but maybe that's not necessary. I can hook up the external speakers directly for casual music listening and then move it over to bluetooth on my stereo if I need to crank it up more.

rastusBut you cannot use Echo in a group and also use the Bluetooth function. I think the better option is to install Alexa on an old phone, connect to Wifi and use the USB out to a DAC. Also, the Echo Link wifi streamer has a decent DAC and connection.

JungstarOr,, Stay with budget, but quality, WiFi & Bluetooth,,, and you don’t have to tell anybody what you are listening to.... beholden to none.
