Q: Pearl Ash (potassium carbonate) Usage

During the mid-18th century and into the 19th century Pearl Ash (potassium carbonate) was used as a chemical leavening agent, much the same as modern-day baking soda.
Just wondering if there is anybody out there that has used Pearl ash instead of baking soda and what kind of results you have had with it.
