Have you ever thought about using a hammock tarp set up? I have switched from tent to hammock due to comfort. it is also much more compact, and the tarp can be used in several different ways if need be.

I jus got another Snugpak Ionosphere, this time in Coyote Tan, for spot & stalk Pronghorns here in Colorado. It’s definitely not “super light“ but take the included extras, put it all back in the stuff sack and leave it at home. Take the complete tent with minimum required stakes etc and put it in your pack, along with the rest of your sleeping gear, in the dry bags they sell at Walmart...win! 👍🏻

If you don’t mind a little extra weight I prefer military combat tents. Very rugged and will last forever with proper care.

REI branded tents such as the Quarter dome and Half dome have served me well in wet, cold, and for many nights in the back country.

How tall/ big are you? I am 5' tall, 115lbs, and the Eureka Spitfire Solocis the best inexpensive piece of gear I own I can stretch out, sit up to get dressed, and fit my pack inside. I know a guy who is 5'5" who has the same tent. Mine is 6 years old and is still going strong. I swapped out the factory stakes with titanium ones , and the total weight is around 2lbs, 9oz. For the money ( approx $120 if you shop around), it is the best thing around. I've toyed with the idea of upgrading to a 6 moons or z PAC, but I can't justify the cost.

You'd probably be looking for a Kelty with that budget.
2 good options: - Rover ($90): https://www.kelty.com/rover/ - Salida ($135): https://www.kelty.com/salida-1/
Another option would be a bevy sack... minimal, but would work. - OR Molecule ($90): https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/en/gear-and-accessories/gear/bivy-sacks/molecule-bivy-regular/p/2428311028222 - OR Bug Bivy ($120): https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/en/gear-and-accessories/gear/bivy-sacks/bug-bivy/p/2428340001222
This post is a bit old... what did you end up getting?
I am also interested in this. I found out that the walmart brand is worthless.

Illinois_knife_guyMaybe you already found a tent. My younger son has a northface storm 3 tent. It is perfect for 2 adults and their packs. My son took it to the Tetons in July where it poured for three days straight. He was only one that stayed completely dry. It is NOT a groovy ultralight, but it sales for half the price! I bought it from Sunny Sports online for under $180. I think it is a superb tent for the price. Good Luck!

I'm personally biased towards anything made by Big Agnes. I love my two man Copper Spur and have no doubt the one man version would be fabulous too.

Tyson82thanks
reecemisterAgree on the Big Agnes but may be tough to get one in that price range and their 1-man tents will be very tight. I use the 2-man Fly Creek for my BP tent and have been happy but that runs significantly north of your budget.
