MTG Commander Decks

more_vert
For those of you who aren't familiar with them, a commander deck is a 100-card deck led by a commander (legendary creature card, or planeswalker). All non-basic land cards in a commander deck may only appear once and may only cost magic colors that appear on your commander.
For instance, if you used Aurelia, the Warleader as your commander, your deck would be comprised of Red and White cards only.
Commander games are typically meant to take a bit longer, and possibly be played as 1v1 or free-for-all, and each person starts with 40 instead of the standard 20 life.

So, if you do, or have played Commander, what deck(s) have you constructed? What strategies did you employ?

I'd recommend finding a commander / general you like and building from there. EDHrec is a good site viewing cards that are commonly paired with different commanders. I liked Nekusar the mindrazor so much when I saw him come out that I built my commander deck around him. Sadly to say, commander is a format with many 3+ color decks. If you intend to do that, you are going to need a big investment in quality land or you'll get into bad spots.

Merieke Ri Berit -- Steal your opponents creatures and spells and use them against them . Tribals: Eldrazi and Slivers with Karona, False God. A Vorthos Zendikari/Gatewatch Tribal Allies with General Tazri. Voltron Auras with Bruna, Light of Alabaster
Still mulling over a Tribal Spirits deck.

I also built my commander out of cards I had, I originally wanted to make it a White/Black/Red, but finding a commander for that was more difficult than I had time for, so I went White/Black with Sorin, Grim Nemesis as my commander.
My deck is primarily built around making the other players regret their decisions and being able to get an unstoppable force going, as such it has a few different strategies.
First, there is Sorin's ultimate (put X 1/1 black vampires with lifelink on the field where X is the highest life total of all players). One of my friends loves building up tons of health with their "life" deck, so this is a nice counter to it if I can keep Sorin around long enough to unleash it.
Then I have a Liliana of the Dark Realms, which has an awesome ultimate (tap swamps for 4 swamp mana) which combines amazingly with From Under the Floorboards' madness cost to get a ton of 2/2 black zombies on the field.
Archangel Avacyn is just great.
Descend upon the Sinful to clear the board, hard (exile all creatures). This typically isn't the best to pair with Rise of the Dark Realms, but it does clear out everything to make a move, and if you can play Congregate with Felidar Soverign right afterwards, winning within a round or two is a pretty good bet.
Necropolic Regent helps me to swell my creatures, a ton. And when paired with Always Watching, I get some extra power and a nice addition of vigilance.
Guardian of the Gateless, paired with Holy Mantel can block any number of creatures, but also has protection from creatures, making it a pretty large wall.
And finally, I have Elixir of Immortality just in case I need a reset (gain 5 life, shuffle Elixir of Immortality and your graveyard into your library).

I threw mine together out of cards I have, so it could probably be better if I put some money into it. But I don't have much of a desire to. =)
My commander is Rakdos, Blood Witch, which gives haste to creatures with +1/+1 counters. As such, I've got a lot of Unleash, Undying, and Bloodthirst. It's also got some aggro going on, so it tries to swell up fast and constantly hit you. It's a lot of fun to play!

Cat deck all day everyday!
But realistically I have not played commander yet. I like the idea behind it but I want to focus on the fundamentals of magic (just getting back into it) for a bit before I jump into a new thing. Over all have you enjoyed Commander over the other formats?

KazI would say that it has its pluses and minuses. It lasts a bit longer, and because you only get to have 1 of each card in your deck, you have a bit more variety to each game, which can be nice. But at the same time, some of the decks I have seen are _really_ broken (such as having demi-gods that force you to sacrifice a creature each turn or lose life).
