Favorite non-FP pen?

more_vert
As much as I love using fountain pens, they're just not ideal for every situation. Thankfully, I love ALL pens, but my favorite non-FP by far is the Uni-ball Signo RT.

I tend to write on the smaller side, so the 0.38 mm size is perfect for me. Also, the thinner, crisp lines make my sloppy cursive look neater, IMO.

The three I have stationed around my house for daily use are:
  1. A limited edition Hello Kitty RT1, with Black ink (the HK designs on this series are subtle, but cute!)
  2. The original Signo RT UM-138 with Lavender Black ink (which as far as I know has been discontinued as a single unit, and can only be found in the multicolor 8-pack)
  3. A Black ink UM-38 cartridge housed in the Pentel Libretto K600 body (I'm a sucker for rose gold, and used this modded pen for signing my marriage license in June this year <3)
Do you have a favorite pen that's not a fountain pen?

My non-fountain pen of choice is a Retro 51 rollerball. Much like a fountain pen, you don't have to apply pressure to the pen to write. I have the Big Shot Cigar. I love the heft it has in hand. It writes so smoothly.

Probably the only ballpoint that I love and am going to continue using no matter what happens in the future, is a now discontinued Pilot GX-300. Sadly, I have snapped off the clip (I am considering gluing it on later), but still it has a very pleasing design with lots of durability to back it up. This one right here is around 15 years old, and still kicking. What is great about them, is that they have refills from Dr. Grip and some other pens that fit them. I also am still fond of Italian-made Cello pens, really nice quality for the price.

While I certainly like fountain pens, I also like other types of writing instruments and use them as well. I prefer a Western XF nib on a fountain pen. With Japanese nibs, I prefer a F or even Fine-Medium (I have a Pilot Custom 74 with a F-M nib and it's very nice.) I like and use the Pentel Philography pen, but with Uniball Signo 0.5 refills. I also like the Uniball Jetstream pens for some uses, and the 0.7mm is the width I prefer. I've found that the thinner widths don't put don't put down enough ink to have as dark a line as I like. I've tried a lot of mechanical pencils, but the first 0.5mm pencil I ever bought, a Pentel P205, is what I keep coming back to. I've bought other P205s since then, as well as the P207 and P209, but I still have the first one on my desk at home and use it. I also like the Parker Jotter pen. I had some Itoya GPR-7 refills that I liked a lot, but they either stopped making them or stopped importing them. I've tried some other refills instead, like the Schneider Gelion 39, but they don't work as well for me as the Itoya ones did. (I can still get the Itoya AQR Aquaroller refills, but I don't like those.) Finally, if I need a pen that I don't mind losing or having damaged, I use the BIC pens with the Ultra ink. Only the Ultra Stic models seems to have this. They don't write as well as the Uni Jetstream, but they're much less expensive.

The robust fat little Stabilo S'Move Wild series are the 2 gel pens I have in my computer bag and slingbag that I never travel without because it performs incredibly well on immigration cards and customs forms that I have to fill. The other is the Boker Plus .5 Micarta tactical pen that is always on me (in case there's ever a need to smash car or bus windows) and it has a Schmidt P900 refill in pink ink to write on my Field Notes Expedition!

Ive found the Pilot V5 to be my favorite. I've tried a lot of pens that I will use for a while, but I always end up with my Pilot again. I do have to say, though, the Fisher Space Pen is definitely my EDC. I work in construction and this pen takes a beating and keeps going.

For pens that I leave everywhere as decoys, I grew up with the Bic Crystal and still have a certain affection for it. 😄

PowerTank or Space Pen only because they can write horizontally which is the only reason they have something over fountain pens.

The Uniball BLX line has a nice range of colors, and they suit me well. I like most uni pens, but I really enjoy the gel pen version with those colors. My handwriting tends to run a bit large.
