AKG7xx with a portable Amp/DAC. Better yet if you can afford it a sound purchase would be JDS labs Element

g6100sCurious, why would you want a portable amp with open back cans?

A09235702374274Could you explain why is it not needed for open back headphones? I really have no knowledge about this stuff, so I need an explanation for almost everything (even if you think it's obvious, cause to me all of this is new).

danimeisteRNo problem. Open back headphones leak sound, and also let outside sound in. This makes them best for quiet environments. There's nothing wrong with using them with a portable amplifier, but most people use them exclusively at their desktop so getting a desktop amp seems like a no brainer to me. (At least in most cases, obviously there will be exceptions)
Feel free to ask me more questions. I'm not a veteran audiophile by any means, but I can probably help with the more basic stuff

A09235702374274Thanks, that's good to know. I can still use them in my room, since portability was not the main issue for me. I'd rather have the best setup for $500 even if it means to be tied to my room to listen to music (most of the time I do it that way anyway). So which desktop amp would you get with the remaining $300? Wouldn't I need a DAC too? And last, would you get different headphones also?

danimeisteRPersonally I would go for the schiit stack (schiit magni 3 + schiit modi 2, $100 each)
For headphones, you should check out the HD6XX if you can stand the wait time. I have both the 6XX and K7XX and by far prefer the sennheisers, although AKG comfort is pretty godly. It really depends what sort of sound signature you want though. 6XX are pretty bassy with rolled off treble, the K7XX are relatively neutral, but there's a noticeable dip in the upper mids which makes female vocals sound a bit recessed. If you want v shaped I would recommend the beyerdynamic dt 770, I got mine for about $130 off newegg during a sale. If neutral is more up your alley look at the dt 880 (also beyerdynamic.) Slightly v shaped, much like the K7XX, but the mids are more consistent, and only slightly recessed. Some people complain about beyerdynamic treble, but personally I love the sparkle that it adds to the music, especially if you listen to electronic like me.

A09235702374274Thanks! Very specific and helpful. I have been watching many reviews these days and the HD6XX get a lot of praise. Thanks for the advice ;)

A09235702374274Maybe to take on trips and or in the office so you can stash it in a drawer? I use my DF Red all the time in hotels, super portable since it is basically a USB stick.
