[Ongoing] Show & Tell: Black and White Photography

more_vert
I'm a sucker for the drama and simplicity of a classic black and white photo. There's something so great about using that minimalism and grain to your advantage, letting the composition stand on its own. I love that feeling when you're flicking through insta filters, and you see your photo in b/w and all of a sudden -boom! It's even better!
I'm a little embarrassed that I have about 7 rolls of b/w film I haven't developed yet to enjoy or share, but at least there's always my beloved iPhone. Below are 2 photos taken in the last year, one with my trusty Canon AE-1 on Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, and the other with my tiny apple device here in SF at Sutro Baths. You'll never guess which is which. lol jk.

Yeah sure, I'll play :) I'm a hobbyist out of Toronto, Canada and shoot primarily Nikon. Or should I say I did since I've sold off my equipment (looking to start over with a lighter setup.)

These images were made with my Canon ELAN II, Carl Zeiss 50mm 1.4 and Ilford FP4 Plus 125 film through out Chicago. I rarely shoot B&W film as I'm happy with results of converting the C-41 & E-6 I develop at home in to B&W in Lightroom plus that's more chemicals I don't have to deal with but once in a while I'll run a roll through my 35mm or medium format and I'm blown away by the results fresh off of the scanner. I shoot almost entirely on B&W film, usually high speed so I can shoot at night. Also love the grain it produces. I'm not really a fan of the larger-than-life look that modern digital photography produces, so I go in the opposite direction and use grain to create other worlds. I post on IG @photoautomata if you're interested in more
