From what I came across, I heard K7XX is superior for games since it has a wider soundstage, and HD6XX is better for music since it's more neutral (preference). I just got the K7XX and plugged it directly into my Nintendo Switch to play ZELDA and the sound blew away my Sennheiser HD598; I did notice the volume was lower on my 7XX vs the HD598. I haven't tried it for FPS yet but I will. It's going to come down to what you do more, play games or listen to music.

MegazineHow do the K7XX sound for music? I like some bass so if it's extra I don't mind. And I play FPS most of the time.

JWarrior939I would take a look at the K712 Pro then. I found my K712s for the same price as my K7XX. I like my K712 Pros better in every area when comparing them to my K7XX. Want a bit more bass out of them I would pick up a pair of the Dekoni Elite Hybrid for the K7XX.

MegazineCan you elaborate how 7xx sound blew away HD598? Was it the sound stage? And were you open back or closed back HD598? Thx

ridhuankimI have a open back HD598. The sound is far richer and more clear on the 7XX. The HD598 sound's a bit more airy. Explosions and gun fire in PUBG (Xbox) sounded far more realistic on the 7XX. I'm not sure which performed better in soundstage, but they are both good in that department. For classical music, all instruments sounded more detailed and precise on the 7XX. Bass is also much deeper. Overall 7XX is better then HD598 in almost every way, in my opinion. Different league.

ridhuankimThe K712 Pro and HD 650 are on the same “tier,” a class above the HD 598. I have an HD 599, and while it is still a good headphone and my go-to for small electronics and weaker-amp sources (I don’t know if my Sony PSVR can handle my HD 650, but the HD 599 fits perfectly snug over the PSVR’s headband “ring” so I use that), the HD 650 and K712 Pro have less of a haze and more “agility” to respond to fast paced music or separate instruments in complex passages. Sometimes, a source holds back the headphones where the HD 650 or K712 would sound like they were at a similar level as the HD 599 (or worse, if the source has a really weak amp and make the more power hungry headphones sound weaker than the HD 599), just with their different sound signatures/frequency responses (sometimes FR can be drastically affected by source). The K712 Pro emphasize space while the HD 650 emphasizes timbre. While the K712 is AKG’s third iteration towards a more modern, well-rounded signature, I still find the Sennheiser to be more well-rounded and emotional while the AKG is still aimed at space and detail. For competitive gaming, the ideal signature de-emphasizes bass, emotion, and things that can startle or distract the gamer from focusing on the tactical and locational sounds, and (IMO) have the kind of agility and micro detail retrieval that lends itself well to surround processing (so you can tell front from back, ideally height too). Sounds weird with music though, less realistic and immersive while gaming or watching movies. A well-rounded headphone can still respond great to a Surround DSP, so long as it has a good level of detail and “agility.” From here, I think readers can (and will) make their own decisions. I don’t think either the K712 or HD 650 deviate towards an extreme specialization, but they have their strengths and distinctions.

EvshrugI'd say the K712 are better for competitive gaming and the HD650 for casual. Anything works for casual gaming really and I would also say that the HD660s would be better for casual gaming than the HD650 due to the improved imaging. You hit the nail on the head for competitive gaming you want to cans that have decent mids and good detailed highs, as that is where sounds like foot steps and the clap of gun fire comes from. With bass heavy headphones this is drown out those sounds a bit and for competitive gaming you do NOT want this. What is odd is that 99% of gaming headsets are bass heavy.

PingsYes! It is hard to go wrong if you choose any good “music headphone,” their higher fidelity provides more realism and less masking of detail. I argue that the lower levels of masking, or “haze” and “mud,” is more important for imaging and picking up on tactical details than the balance of frequency response, while a good frequency response achieves realism and immersion. Worry less about the sound signature being “good enough for competitive,” because the well-established options all will be, and choose more based on factors like fit, comfort, and practicality. While I can’t think of a headphone that is more god-mode competitive than my HD 800 (and it gives me a shock how awesome it is every time I hook it up!), I use my Sennheiser PC37X the most out of all the headphones I have on hand because it is practical and easy (I connect it to my iPad and use it for gaming, business calls, some light voiceover work for videos, and find it about equivalent to the HD 599 for music enjoyment).

EvshrugI've heard that the HD 800/S are the ultimate gaming headphones but, just never got to test that out. Maybe one day I will.

MegazineTotally overkill, but the soundstage and imaging blow me away. I can’t wait till my kickstarter Smyth Realiser A16 arrives someday, to feed personalized surround sound to my Sennheiser HDV 820, just so I can say I’ve experienced the best possible experience on the market in my lifetime. I didn’t get here all at once... I had an AKG Q701, K712, K612, Sennheiser HD 700, and HD 58X Jubilee, among other things over time, but I was heavily into gaming audio with headphones for 8 years (and a full year of saving) before I finally got my “holy grail” HD 800 headphones.

(Yeah, I knicked my neck shaving today, it hurt me more than it hurts you!) (Also, the Orpheus HE-1 would beat my setup. I don’t expect ever to own such a setup. To my knowledge, nobody has ever played a video game on that headphone yet – but I bugged the team at Head-Fi to try it when they had one on loan! That would have been so satisfying to hear about. Most people can get an HD 800 someday if they save up; it took me just a few months of not spending the fun budget on dining out at expensive places, vacations, more than one game...) Games with great audio: CoD4: Modern Warfare, CoD: Ghosts (I bet Black Ops 4 will be too), Halo ODST (That soundtrack!!) and most Bungie games (so easy to find Destiny chests and resources with surround!), Metro 2033, Bioshock, The Last of Us, Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain (and Ground Zeros), Far Cry series, and more! I think I would love the latest Zelda, but I don’t have a Nintendo Switch (best to connect an audio device to that with HDMI).

EvshrugI had a great experience with my 7XX playing Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red kept improving the game 3+ years after release. I've played Zelda: BoTW with surround sound and it's a great experience. The sound track is really nice, especially the ambiance music in dungeons. If you want a great video experience using cans, I would recommend REZ Infinite on PS4. The soundtrack really is something to behold, since gameplay effects the soundtrack; shooting and taking out enemies, even while just spamming the shoot button has a pattern to the snares. As you get deeper into the levels, the music starts to come together, adding elements that wasn't in the previous part of the level. @Evshrug you're going to love this, imo it's the ultimate video game soundtrack experience https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7XQcGOkYds

MegazineREZ Infinite has a PSVR mode, right? I bought the Witcher 3, almost ready to start it! Just feel guilty sinking my teeth into that when I have work coming up, lol! EDIT: REZ Infinite looks awesome! Yep, you’re right, that was fun. Reminds me of a game I watched my friend play, it was an exploration game with similar graphics, and all the puzzles would create music. FRACT OSC! I think you’d really like that game too, it’s neat!
