This post led me to do a little research. You listed a Maratac watch as implementing a sweeping seconds hand; other places I've seen it are the Bulova Precisionist line and watches implementing the higher end Seiko Spring Drive system (I'm sure other sweeping quartz watches exist, I'm just not familiar with them). I also stumbled across Seiko's interesting "Mecaquartz" system, which appears to combine a quartz and an automatic movement in a chronograph.
To address your question about solar sweeping movements, in my brief search I wasn't able to find any current ones, although I did discover the (sparsely documented) Citizen Eco-Drive Duo, which appears to combine solar and sweeping functionality.
EDIT: I found this somewhat informative article about the Eco-Drive Duo, popping it into Google Translate gives a decent idea of what it's saying: http://www.citizenmania.it/tecnologia/eco-drive-duo-e-la-storia-della-tecnologia-eco-drive/
Perhaps someone else has some knowledge on the subject?

sistem_32I did a little research myself and found that the main drawback of a higher beat rate quartz movement is that it really drains batteries quick. It seems a solar powered system would get around this problem. I mean who really needs a 9 month power reserve with a quartz watch? I'd rather put that extra power to use moving the seconds hand nice and smooth around the dial.

ap0geeI agree about the power reserve, although personally I'd be willing to swap out batteries more frequently to get that nice sweep, especially when they still seem to last a few years in a sweeping movement.

sistem_32Two handers are a nice quartz solution, as it hides the one second tick. For just the opposite reason I would never buy a two handed automatic. Here's is the one two handed quartz I have, an oldie (1997) but goodie that I've since given to my wife to wear because of its 34mm diameter.

PetrosD+1 however I'm a little different in that I like 2 hander autos too and really enjoy my vintage Rado w no secs
and would love to add another no seconds auto or manual to my box next few years

sistem_32Don't mind ticks at all, my reason for liking my little 2 handed quartz is the lines design and ultra thin 5mm case Remember sweep is a misnomer it ticks and tocks as well just faster than 1x per second, to that and as said above Bulova owns the high frequency oscillation and to some extent Seiko as seem in GS
Seiko mechaquartz was mentioned, but ETA did similar i have an autoquartz from tissot and the ,movement was used in the Omegamatic as well, and i think Fortis had a Model too

Danbo_de_PianoVery cool. Given how simple a quartz movement is I wonder why there are so few that beat faster than once a second. It seems like it would be pretty easy to reprogram a traditional quartz movement to beat 6-10 times a second instead of just once. And a solar or kinetic powered version would take care of the battery drain drawback. I still love my mechanicals but just think this type of solar/kinetic powered quartz would be pretty cool to see. Accurate time, smooth operation and no need to change a battery.

sistem_32Alright, so basically we need a solar or kinetic powered Bulova Precisionist. Problem solved. Who wants to start a Kickstarter ;)

ap0geeBulova is held by Citizen which has ecodrive tech, so the company that can do it already has it for both but likely won't mix the two.
