There Are Pandas, and Then There Are Pandas.
And this isn't either of them! The Pandas we're talking about here, are watches, not bears. And what got me thinking about them (again) was a link posted this morning by @cm.rook who pointed a few of us to the very attractive (and not terribly priced) Yema "Rallygraph" Panda which, in it's most traditional arrangement, looks like the one on the left, but can also be had in the version on the right: The model on the left is a true Panda, while the model on the right is called a reverse Panda. The yarn: I spent about $15 at my local yarn shop on acrylic/wool blends in neutral colors. Next time, I'd like to play around with chunkier textures for more dimension and thinner yarns for more intricate patterns. But for a "getting the basics down" first project, these did the trick.
The result: a 12 x 17-inch wall weaving with wood beads and a simple twig-and-twine mount... kind of a solar system-y vibe going on. There are some things I like about it, and a lot I know I can improve on. At first, this was more about the process for me than the finished product, but now I'm getting excited about all the techniques I can learn to add visual interest. This feels like a pretty good start!
Would love to see some other first projects, too—woven or otherwise. Happy crafting, y'all!
