Microphone throughput..

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a problem I'm dealing with.
Basically, I am now 70% deaf and use HA's. I have started down the DAC path to boost volume etc.
Initial unitI bought is a Sound blaster E5, with Bose Quite Comfort 3's. All good for music and podcasts, movies etc.
Issue I have is in not having the ability to use in a voice conversation, as the mic doesn't work? And me shouting at a the phone is well......damn funny! Except in all manner of situations.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

I wrote a long reply, only to find out the Soundblaster E5 has built-in mics. DOH! That invalidated everything I wrote. Starting again!
Take a look at your audio settings to see which mic your computer is trying to use. Make sure it's using the ones on the E5. Then check to see what the input gain levels are set to for that mic, and for your system-wide audio input. If either of those are muted or cranked really low, your computer will act like the microphone isn't even there. If in doubt, see if there's a troubleshooting guide for the E5 to help you get the mics working. Chances are you won't be the first (or last) person who's had this problem.
I have a Focusrite 2i2 interface for my laptop I use for mic input. It had a direct monitoring so you hear what the mic hears with zero latency, which is great for listening to your own voice with headphones in, gaming and such like. Maybe something like that would suit you if that's what you mean?
