New Audiophile Headphones

more_vert
So, for about 2 months now ive been considering getting a new pair of audiophile headphones. Currently I use a pair of Audio Technica AUD ATHAD500X as my daily drivers, and I wanted your guys' opinion on another pair I should get. My current pair is deteriorating at an increasing rate, i expect to get maybe another 2 months out of them. I mainly use them for media consumption, fps gaming and small bits of audio monitoring on my spare time. Feel free to drop your opinions and recommendations down below, my budget is below 220 USD

I have found the Sennheiser PC37X headset to be pretty good and it comes with a mic.
I haven't used them much (actually got them as a gift to someone else), but I have had a chance to try them and found them to be very comfortable as well as having much nicer sound quality than some headsets that I have spent significantly more money on.
Massdrop has them going right now ($120): https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-sennheiser-pc37x-gaming-headset

Ahh, so probably not an issue. Alright. It was just something I thought I'd share since it's a common fix for mics not sounding great plugged directly into the computer.

New pads for your AD500X, or soldering in a new cable if it's the cable giving issues. Unless one of the drivers is actually giving problems?
Does your budget account for a mic/do you need one/want one? Since you're used to open back, and want gaming, something like the AKG-K7XX is good, with a somewhat neutral sound signature. The Sennheiser HD 598 is always a recommended pair too, and you can sometimes grab them on sale for pretty cheap.
Do you have a preferred tonal signature?

If you don't need the isolation factor, I'd stick with Open Back for gaming. M50x isn't going to give you the best positional audio, and if you liked your M40x's sound signature and wanted a step up while keeping a closed back, the ATH-MSR7 is usually better liked than the M50x from people that like the M40x. It's a bit towards the upper end of your budget, and with a modmic 4.0 without mute switch and their free shipping promotion on their site this month that ends today/tomorrow. 43+185=228, so 8 over budget.
On that budget, open back, with mic. HD 598 is a good one at your budget range, especially if you catch it on sale you can sometimes find them around 100-125. You could stick with the AD series and try something like the AD700X as well.
