So the matter isn't as simple as what chip (DAC) comes soldered to your sound card but the sound card itself. Like Will is saying once you cross over into the more professional or -phile world of audio you need different output options. As a digital DJ at one time you needed multiple sound cards to have multiple outputs. With advancements in tech that come in laptops and controllers there isn't a huge need to have many separate sound cards. Still my Numark controller has its own sound card and DAC controlled by serato software meaning I can use the headphone output for other things like listening to a song before I load it (you can que it in software, just an example) once you start using an amp you need the options that internal and external DAC units provide. If an amp has a 3.5mm jack and you have no real audio electricial interference then yes just amp up the signal and power your headphones.
