So if I have a Macbook pro I don't need a dac to get the most out of my new purple heart fostex that are coming in the mail? (you'll have to excuse my ignorance, as I'm new to the community). I was just about to post a question in those regards. Can my Macbook pro drive my fostex headphones on its own?

PurpleknightDon't worry, everyone's new at some point. First of all, if you wish to get the most out of your pair of cans, what you really need is an amplifier, not a DAC. Amplifiers are the one's responsible for pushing the drivers in your headphones to make them sound better. Apart from harmonic distortion, there is usually not much signal manipulation inside an amplifier. A DAC, on the other hand, is what's responsible for ensuring you get the clearest replication of what's stored on your digital music file. It does not tamper with the sound of your headphones, but rather the sound that's being "transferred" to your headphones. As to whether your MacBook Pro drive your headphones, it probably can, but the sound you get is probably far from what the full potential the Purple Heart can bring.
