Bose QC35's do not sound good. What is going on here?!

ajileMediaI think this discussion is about portable audio, not limited to portable hi-fi/audiophile gears. I definitely agree with you that QC35 is nowhere near hi-fi. Its sound is inferior to other headphones of even its own kind such as Sony WH-1000xm2 (which is not an audiophile gear either). However, considering their comfort and usefulness because of ANC, those Bluetooth ANC Bose's and Sony's are great portable gears to many people that are not audiophiles.

ajileMediaI read somewhere that the noise cancelling headphones (yes even the Sennheiser ones) sacrifice a bit of audio quality for the NC and battery life, but I need to read up/find where I found that at.

Your_Average_GamerThey kind of have to. They take an electrical or digital sound signal and changes it (removes noice) and then convert this to audio. A normal headphone only has to take a signal and convert it to audio. Less work to do should sound better for a given price.
It's even worse when you consider that most nc headphones uses digital correction. That means they need microphones, a/d-converters, a processor and a d/a-converter. And then still have to convert the signal till audio.

RayFThey are just not high quality sound. Recessed mids, bass isn't tight. Treble isn't sparkly, detail is meh. To each their own. I was just surprised how many people were commenting like they were the bar in sound. Noise cancelling is excellent, no question there.

ajileMediaWell you're probably right from an audiophile's point of view; I'm guessing there are lots of headphones that beat them for sound quality. On the other hand, everyone who bought them had (I hope) noise canceling uppermost in mind. And for that, most folks give them the nod. Actually, I wish the noise canceling worked better (my girlfriend/worst nightmare, is a big fan of "Housewives of wherever the fuck" and if I had to hear one more decibel of the those annoying , up-talking, pretentious bitches (can I say bitches on MD?--I fucking hope so), anyway, you get my point. I'd certainly pay twice as much for twice for the noise canceling ability of the QC35s. But as things are, they've kept me from cutting my wrists on many a long, suffering evening. Meanwhile, I've got the HIFIMAN HE4XX Planar Magnetic Headphones on order along with the damn Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones. And if MD ever decides to ship either of them, I'll be glad to give you my opinions of one vs the other. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you--I sure as hell am not!

RayFYou can curse, no-one is gonna stop you. Yeah, these 150 dollar Sony MDR-1As could probably curb stomp on the WH1000X Mark 2s in audio quality, even when the latter is 298 dollars (both are marketed Hi-Res audio by Sony). The WH1000 Mark 2 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Noise-Cancelling-Headphones-WH1000XM2/dp/B074KDJVS2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1520134034&sr=8-2&keywords=wh-1000xm2 The MDR-1A on Newegg: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA36Z6YR6702&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-Mobile%20Nations%20/%20Smartphone%20Experts-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=8365078&SID=UUthUdUnU5395YYw

Your_Average_GamerI know I can curse, I was being facetious. You still haven't made your point--every review I've read rates the QCs over the Sonys. That said, your ears (and mine) my vary.

RayFEvery review you've read? How many have you read, and how many of them were from audiophiles of at least entry-level? I don't care if 100% of Beats-lovers commend Bose's sound.
You have the right to enjoy muddy sound, loose bass and recessed highs, but that makes you far from the audiophile world. "Mine sound good" is meaningless when one never hears good sound at all. Wait until you receive your HE4XX and HD6XX and some decent DAC/amp, would you?
BTW, mind your language. Cursing for no reason does nothing but makes you look childish and foolish, which I am sure you are not.

jiangzhenjerryYou continue to miss the point, you annoying, little twit. No one claims any noise canceling headphones are superior to any single purposed, audiophile headphones. Noise canceling headphones are by design, intended for one function primarily, and the second function, secondarily. I had initially assumed even a shit-for-brains, game playing, still living with your Mom, adolescent like yourself could have figured that out by the label on the box. Evidently not. How many reviews have I read? You mean yours? Or you mean qualified reviews? Many, but I actually own a pair, so I'm a tad beyond reading about them, or listening to the opinions of people who don't. I suggest you do buy a pair, then shove them up your ass, and see if they sound any better. That location being much closer to your ears, will I suspect, resolve your muddy base issues once and for all. And if not, may I suggest you shove them up a little further?

RayFApparently someone has zero memory. Let me remind you this: it was you who said "mine [QC35s] sound good". But they don't. You won't find a single post on Head-Fi that says they sound good. I support people buying ANC headphones for the ANC function. I have Bose, Sony and B&W ANC headphones myself, purely for ANC. But if you say any of them sounds good, then that is... so laughable and pathetic. I feel so sorry for you, kid. And you are also very uneducated, both in and out of the audio world.

ajileMediaIf you want BT HiFi ANC go with either the Sony WH-1000mx2's, or the Sennheiser PXC 550's, they both blow the QC35's out of the water and are both a great choice

LudoPiscesWondering how you would go about substantiating any of those claims, you know, aside from the echo chamber babble one comes across in these sorts of environments? I mean "blow out of the water" isn't actually a number that shows up on a spec sheet or data table, does it? And it's not like these manufacturers operate in a vacuum, right? So I'm guessing you're actually expressing a personal opinion, much like my good buddy, jiangzhenjerry, who also seems to have more than a bit of experience evaluating noise canceling headphones (that he may or may not own). Of course, if you actually do own all three, then your opinion would carry a hell of lot more weight--at least with me, but then I'd wonder why anyone (aside from jiangzhenjerry) would actually buy all three main-stream ANCs? That's either a lot of disposable income tossed at what everyone here seems to feel are pretty crappy headphones (aside from the ANC bit). So, I'm curious-- you guys live in an especially noisy world or just like to make a lot of noise?

RayFI work in a small "mom and pop" audio shop and work as their front man. My job is to know the ins and outs of every product we have on hand. We do carry all three models mentioned above so I have built a pretty decent understanding of how they each sound. The QC 35's boast the best ANC while the Sonys possess a better build and sound, but the Senns essentially tie with the Sonys in terms sound quality, ANC, BT capabilities, and additional features. With the sonys and Senns, it comes down to personal preferences in branding. Please sir, do not make any assumptions on other people just because they say something that's off of what you believe. Get off of your high-horse please.

morniteYeah, not too many BT ANC headphones can boast the "seal of approval" but just turn off blutooth and anc, hook em up to a decent amp, and enjoy the show

LudoPiscesThat's the strange thing. They sound better (to me) when using Bluetooth or with the power on. I've got decent amps to connect them to, too (Dragonfly, Asgard, Valhalla 2). I think the WH-1000XM2 does some DSP magic when it's powered on.

morniteThe other night I noticed the ANC/Power light turned off (automatically) when I inserted the jack into my QC35s. You can turn it back on again (I think), but obviously you wouldn't. As for sounding better in BT mode, I concur.
