I've never owned a nice pair of anything audio related (I have only owned some $100 Bose sport earbuds that I don't use anymore) but I am looking for some Bluetooth, active noise cancellling headphones to buy over the summer mostly for when I go off to college next year. I am not too picky about having the best sound quality so I'm hoping to spend a bit less than the ~$350 price tags that you often see. Should I settle with something sub $200 (or I've even seen suitable headphones for sub $100) or try to wait for a sale/Massdrop on something better? Any headphone recommendations are appreciated too. PS. Type-C charging would be a plus but I can't find anything like that

AirsilvasThose are a bit more than I'd like to spend, and personally I am not a fan of the aesthetics. Thanks for the recommendation but I doubt I'll get something from Sennheiser if it's not on sale. The reviews on their cheaper headphones seem a bit iffy.

Ryan_LI agree with Benjamin, the QC35s are truly wonderful. Ever since I got my pair, I never go anywhere without them. I know they are a bit pricey, but now that the Series II is out (barely different from the first version), you should be able to find the first version for a bit cheaper. I think it would definitely be worth the investment because you will likely use them every single day for many hours.
OR... if the QC35 are absolutely out of your budget, here's an idea: the QC25 goes for $160 refurbished, and that's a pretty darn good deal. https://www.bose.com/en_us/products/headphones_outlet/quietcomfort-25-acoustic-noise-cancelling-headphones-apple-devices-factory-renewed.html#v=qc25_fr_black If you really want them to be wireless, you can buy the Airmod adapter for $70 to make them wireless: http://a.co/fFi5fgz Then you would practically have a QC35, but for $230.

Ryan_LSennheiser HD-1. Sony MDR-1000X or wh100xm2. The Sonys have better noise cancelling but not quite as good sound (though still very good). The Sonys can be had under USD 350 new on Amazon. The Senns too, if you look for a deal and particularly if you buy used on ebay. The HD-1 (what used to be the Momentum 2.0 wireless until there was a trademark dispute) is better than the PXC 550, I'd say even much better and not that much more money. I would suggest you first try them out. The ear cups on these cans tend to be smaller than for audiophile open over the ear cans and comfort is really important. Give them a good listen for an hour each if you can to suss out comfort before you buy. Since they are closed (and hence don't breathe like open cans) and given their use case you might be wearing them outdoors, comfort is really important and personal.

Ryan_L If you want wireless earbuds, I recommend the Jaybird X3's or Advanced Sounds Model 3. The Jaybird's are incredibly durable and will survive anything you throw at them during college while the Model 3s have amazing sound with replaceable cables that let you go wired if you want even better audio quality. For full size there's too many options and it'll depend more and what you're expecting from your sound but I'd get one of Bose's QC series headphones because of the noise canceling. With everything happening on college dorms some peace and quiet is always welcome.

techintosh12I would have to disagree with the endorsement of the QC35. They are light and great if you want to sleep in an airplane seat. The noise cancelling isn't necessarily better than on the Sony MDR-1000X or the Sony WH100XM2 in my opinion. However the sound quality is frankly horrendous compared to either Sony or the Sennheiser HD-1/Momentum 2.0 wireless. The noise cancelling on the Sennheisers is decent but not as good as Bose or Sony and seems to be designed to provide a black background in a somewhat noisy place like an open office but not actually effectively cancel noise somewhere noisy. The sound quality on the Sennheisers is a better than either Sony. The only reason I would choose the Bose is if you aren't comfortable with either of the other two or you value a little less weight tremendously more than anything else. IMHO, Bose in general is great at marketing, not so great on actual products. Not that different from Beats in that regard.

akapurRight now I have narrowed my high-end search down to QC35s series I or II. The touch controls on the Sony headphones seem like more of a hassle than useful to me and I've heard that Bose's are more comfortable, have slightly better noise cancellation and can connect to multiple devices at the same time. However, I feel like I would be about as happy with earphones that cost half of that price so I am still unsure.

Ryan_LThe Sony Hear.ON Wireless are basically the MDR-1000X with buttons instead of touch controls and are available new pretty heavily discounted, possibly half the price of the Bose if you look at the usual suspects online.

Ryan_LAlso FYI, I have the MDR-1000X. Wanted a set of cans with noise cancelling at the same level as the Bose for the NYC subway and flights but much better sound quality so got them. the touch controls are actually pretty useful and intuitive. The only issue with them is that there are some serial numbers where the headband can crack. I actually got one of those, it cracked. Sony shipped me a brand new replacement, no questions asked.

akapurThose look spot on. I am surprised I had not stumbled across them in my searching, but I will have certainly look into them more. Thank you and everyone else for all the help!

akapurJeez they seemed great but they can't swivel flat to put them around your neck comfortably. I might still consider them, but that's almost a deal breaker. Why this is an issue when they expect people to pay hundred of dollars is beyond me. I found them for $210 new and ~$190 refurbished if I wanted a case. (one listing at $170 with seemingly neither a case nor cable)
