Any recommendations on fun, "musical" headphones, preferrably closed-back (but I'll try open as well)? I had the B&O H6 (gen 2) which I enjoyed the inviting sound and the imaging, but wasn't a fan of the relaxed bass. Any others that I should check out? Thanks!

JL3001Very interesting that you've asked this question at this particular time. Well, very interesting to me anyway. I've spent the past several weeks researching a headphone that might very well fill the bill for you, the Meza Classics 99. I can't count the number of times I've seen this headphone referred to as either musical or fun. But there's one caveat I have to get out of the way: I haven't yet heard these headphones. After reading and watching all the reviews, I decided they were worth taking a shot at even without first hearing them. I expect them to arrive in the mail any day now, and at that point obviously I'll know a little bit more about how fun or musical they are. But I'd strongly encourage you, in the meantime, to go out and look at a few of these reviews. There are several video reviews on YouTube and Head-Fi offers a wealth of information on these cans.

orsonwellzThank you for the recommendation! Please let me know what you think of them after taking a listen. I've heard great things about them from Zeos' Youtube channel, but the only way I would be able to try them is by buying them...and after recently picking up the DT770s and the Audio Technica WS1100s for an audition, my wallet is not agreeing right now.

JL3001TH-x00 and Emu Teak are fun to listen too. Semi-closed/open though.

JL3001I recently picked up a pair of NAD HP50 headphones. They are awesome, so long as you give them a few hours of brown noise to break them in. Ten hours worked wonders for me.

JL3001Well depending on your budget and if you can find them on sale, I highly recommend the Sennheiser PXC 550's. They're wireless, Bluetooth, Hi-Fi Certified, and with the CapTune app, you can customize the sound to your exact liking. Lemme tell ya, you can have them flat for a normal sound signature, but when you lick it into "Movie" mode... HOKY SHIT they kick ass! All around great headphones if you've got the money to spend

JL3001I'd recommend the Meze 99 Classics as well. As mentioned, they are very fun. They're also completely serviceable and every part on them can be replaced. They also include a nice list of accessories such as a hard case for $300. Not to mention, the Walnut cups are very sexy. They recently made it onto the wall of fame on InnerFidelity.

JL3001It depends on what you mean by musical. I agree the 99 classic is a great headphone, but its pretty neuteral. If you want a V shape the classics are not musical in that sense. They have a nice sense of warmth and provive a soothing smooth and laid back kind of tone to a relatively flat signature. If that sounds like what you want then go for it. Id also not reccomend you listen to Z reviews, as entertaining as his videos can be his opinions are all across the map and id never take them very seriously.

jaydunndidditThanks for recommendation! The cans look great, but I was hearing that a recent pad change has lead to them being far more bassier than before. Do you have any comments on the bass?

JL3001I ordered mine recently and I believe they came stock with the newer pads so sadly I can't compare the two. Honestly, the bass is nice and respectable. What it lacks in bass quantity or accuracy, it makes up for with respectable sub bass and mid bass response. At worst, if you don't like the bass response, then get the other pads. That's the beauty of this unit are the interchangeable and available parts.

jaydunndidditThat's kind of harsh on Z. If adherence to measurements is objectivist, Z is the complete opposite. He just likes whatever floats his boat, and relays more how headphones make him feel than how they sound. Nothing wrong with that, just another way to be.
He does provide the service of comparing headphones a listener may not have access to.

SqueeI never made that claim in this thread, someone else did. But I will say, compared to the plethora of quality reviewers and sites out there, Zeos falls WA~AY short. No mention of anything of substance, just subjective blathering. It's entertaining, sure, but not something I would base an expensive purchase off of. Not to mention, he is all over the place in what he is saying, recommendations, gear, etc.
InnerFidelity and many other forums do a much better job with frequency charts and more objective information so you KNOW what you're buying, spec wise. They then match those specs with their opinion to form an actual review so you know why something is off, sounds weird, or caters to your taste. Zeos doesn't really do any of that. I'm sure it's entertaining but if I'm about to blow $1k on ear/headphones, I need something more than 'entertainment'.
Just for fun, the quality of the review for the 99 classic is staggering. Zeos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEid0p0Vgwo says almost nothing to make me want to buy this headphone for over 10 minutes and rambles on a lot.
Tyll from Innerfidelity actually does a good job of simply explaining their merits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m40Z2gmf9BY and if you want even more info, the page has all the charts and a written review that ties everything together. He even has a breakdown of the headphone and shows every damn component!
I get it, people like Zeos but when it comes to actually reviewing items well, he falls way short.

jaydunndidditThe way I see it. Zeos is like the friend who is into headphones, giving you a layman perspective of what he recommends. Which is something more people can relate to. including me. But of course, he cannot be the only person you watch to base off an expensive purchase. I couple his reviews with multiple written reviews before putting my money down.
InnerFidelity is possibly the best popular headphone reviewer in that he is thorough with his reviews, clear, concise, and the recommendations are usually solid. But, I cant say I would click on his reviews if it appears on my feed, it's more something I search for when I am interested in a product. For Zeos, if his reviews pop up on my feed, even if it isnt a product I am interested in, I still click it thanks to the entertainment factor.

sloppyjoe sloppyjoe : "I still click it thanks to the entertainment factor."
Zeos is a guy who likes talking a lot and shooting youtube videos. Badly, because he can't even hold a camera still. And has a weird thing for Japanese anime kink. It just so happens that his random subject to talk about is headphones. Like you said, he's an entertainer. He's not a reviewer.

sloppyjoeZeo is moron who has no understanding of what he's talking about. If you're clicking on his review for entertainment rather than an accurate review, then you pretty much agreed with me, even if that wasn't your intention.

JL3001so you want the thump?
p7 wireless, new revision. If I’m Ever in the need of more bass than my Pm-3s, i go with B&W.
but make sure it’s rhe p7 WIRELESS, not the original wired version, which has a more toned down bass.
