I'm trying to find a set of closed back headphones to use for work, in an open plan office.
I've tried IEMs and I haven't found a set that I can wear for more than about an hour without my ears hurting. They're also hard to take out when someone walks up to me.
I can't use open headphones because any sound leaking out will annoy the people who sit near me.
I have the HD6XX at home, which I love. I'm looking for something fun to listen to, not necessarily a studio headphone. I use an iphone as my source. I tried a pair of bose QC35s and the sound just doesn't do it for me. I don't need ANC (some others I've tried hurt my ears, or I hear a buzz in the background) but I definitely can't have any sound leak out. Comfort while wearing glasses is required also.
Help?

dortmunder13The Meze 99 classics or neo are popular for this application.
My closed-back, drive-em-off-of-a-phone headphones are the Beoplay H6, which are very nice for their portability, but have a semi-on-ear fit that won't be comfortable for everyone. At work I normally use Audeze iSines, which are IEMs and closed-back, so they won't fit your use case, but I like them because they pass enough sound that I can be vaguely aware of what's going on around me. Good earbuds are also nice for this reason (I also keep a pair of Venture Electronics Zen 2 earbuds at work). Neither leaks enough sound to cause problems.

dortmunder13I can recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones. I've been using them at work in an open environment office for a while now and they are great and not that expensive. They sound good and have really good noise isolation. While they don't have ANC, they do a good job of dampening down ambient noise when not playing music. I've got a pair of Sound Professionals velour earpads since the standard faux-leather ones had me sweating during long sessions. I can't vouch for the comfort while wearing glasses though...
P.S: I can relate with the ANC issue, I've never quite gotten used to it.

dortmunder13I use a pair of AKG K553 Pros at work when open-backs aren't an option. Not sure when the last drop was for those though. You can get a pair on eBay for $140-$200. They're marketed as studio cans, but I really enjoy them, personally. They're gigantic, but still my first choice for blocking out the rest of the world. If your glasses are much wider than your face, you may find them affecting the seal. It's not an issue for me though.

dortmunder13Contrary to above replies, I approve of the Meze 99 Classics/Neos. They are definitely a good pair. Amazing bass + fun sound signature. My only cons for those headphones are that they don't fold up since closed headphones for me are mainly for outside use. M50xs please think twice before getting them. I got them as my first pair of closed headphones, and there are unbearable to listen to for fun imo. Soundstage is claustrophobic, pads are thin as heck, Treble hurts my ears, my ears get really warm after 45minutes, Bass is muddy. These are strictly monitoring headphones imo, hence the "M"in the name, not for fun. I cant comment on the AKG K553 Pros, since I dun have any experience with them.
For my recommendation, I have 2 of them. The Sony MDR-1A, which can be found cheap on sales. These have a fun soundstage, bass is punchy enough, nothing to shout home about for the treble and slightly recessed mids. And they cant be folded. The comfort is alright at best.
The other is the more expensive V-Moda M100s. These headphones are at the top of my list for portable closed headphones for fun. GREAT build quality (like seriously impressive), fun sound signature (great bass, decent soundstage, treble and mids are pretty good), it folds to an impressively small footprint, comes with 2 cables, a really nice case (small to hold the headphones when folded). HOWEVER, the comfort out of the box is questionable. The clamp out of the box is tight for me, but a few stretches of the band solved that perfectly. But the stock pads are horrible. Thin with little to no padding and barely if not even covering your ears. But, when I got the optional XL Pads for about 20 dollars (?), comfort really skyrocketed. Soundstage also gets wider by a bit. And they don't get hot despite hours of wearing them. Though, comfort is really down to the individual.
My vote: M100s V-Moda + XL Pads. P.S: I cant stand the QC35s as well. :)

dortmunder13Also consider the Shure srh840. They’re supposedly like the m50x just better. See Zeo’s review: https://youtu.be/K-kA95uQWeg ($199)
If you’d like even better sound quality, consider the audeze el8c. They‘re supposed to sound like the lcd3s, but in a closed back form. Audeze recently dropped the price from 700 to 330, and it’s been so popular at that price it’s been sold out. But if you’re patient it might be worth it.
I’ve also heard great things about the new Monoprice m1060c at 330.
personally I use a Oppo pm-3 with a ha2se and I love that combo. But it may be too flat for your taste

dortmunder13Get the AKG K553 or the older 550. I researched headphones for 3 weeks on reddit, head-fi etc. Trust me XD. Metal571 on youtube describes them as being the ultimate office headphone. I got the 550 and then the 553 . They have the same drivers. the only difference is in the tuning, the 553 are fixed from a slight rining edge, and have more correctly filled out mid bass. They simply excel for the price. Metal571 finds it difficult to recommend anything but them. Excellent imaging

dortmunder13I ended up with beyerdynamic DT770 32ohm. I auditioned a bunch of the choices and this was the best combination of sound, price and comfort, at least for me. I tried the audiotechnica MSR7s and I wouldn't wear them for more than 2 songs without the headband hurting my head.

kukkurovaca[edit] whoops, I see that you already got some cans. Enjoy them! Second on the Meze 99 Classics.
I waited forever to get a pair of these, because like many of us in the head-fi world, I've got rather a lot of headphones, and still just the two ears. I knew they aren't better on paper than pairs I already own, but finally some rolled around used.
They are just as generally described, easy to drive, easy to listen to, and just fun.
I'm surprised MD has never had a drop on these.
Cheers!

dortmunder13Try the Oppo pm 3s. Closed back planar, with a nice non sibilant treble.
