Newbie here, I picked up a pair of Primo-8s and am waiting for it to arrive. Was wondering what kind of DAC/Amp combos people use with these iems. Preferably ones with batteries as I'm often on the go. Also, the 6XX is so tempting, but they're open backed ): Does it really make a big deal, if i'm the type to listen to rock and loves to crank it up?

MarcusKFor the HD6XX, it is not the wisest choice to bring them outside. For one, they require decent amplification, which further requires an extra good source or noise and distortion would be amplified. This means an expensive and likely bulky dac/amp combo. The next concern would be the open-backed design. It's not just leaking audio out and disturbing your neighbours- external noise floods in without restraint as well. Just how much of the potential of the HD6XX can be heard through that I do not know. Unless you're staying in an open and serene countryside or such, I wouldn't recommend it.

phoenixsongYeah, there aren't any current drops that would fit that criteria that i'm looking for. A closed back within $200 range with really good sounds

MarcusKIf it's in the privacy of your own home open backed headphones can't be beat. They have better soundstage and audio 90% of the time. I would not suggest open backed headphones in public or in a noisy room. Additionally, many people complain about sound bleed with open backed headphones but I find these claims blown way out of proportion. I use a pair of HD600s and the sound bleed is basically inaudible.
The only downside to open backed headphones is bad isolation but if you're in a quiet environment that doesn't matter

MarcusKYes it makes a HUGE difference, especially if on a bus or around people. If not and you don't want to block out the sound around you, they would be fine. Then again if you are around people and are a rebellious rock and roller, you could just tell them to piss up a rope, and crank it up louder.

Sounds like Audio Technica ATH-M50X to me. About $150, sometimes less.

MarcusKI'm really enjoying my recently purchased Fiio Q1mk2, base and gain switches, balanced h-phone out. It's smaller than it looks online, labels hard to read but you'll memorize the features and enjoy quickly. PLENTY of power for IEMs and very portable. I use it with my Chromebook and paid Spotify. You can easily stack with Cayin N3, just about the same size, looks gym-friendly that way too. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0757MH46M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
