24-70mm f2.8 vs 24-105mm f4 Canon lens??

more_vert
I'm looking to replace my current standard 1 8-55mm canon lens with a better and more versatile lens and have been looking at the 24-70mm f2.8 and 25-105mm f4 canon lenses. Any suggestions as to which might be better ?
Started photography about 8-9months ago - have progressed quite a bit in the last few months and am looking for something that would be versatile in a range of situations - be it landscape photography to street photography and portraits. Basically something I can carry around with me on a daily basis which I known will help me deliver great shots. Would appreciate any suggestions/feedback...

Thanks!!

Only you know if you need that extra stop of light or the extra reach of the longer zoom. But I would not get rid of that kit lens. 18mm is a lot wider than 24mm on a crop body. And don't let anyone tell you that a standard kit zoom is garbage. It might not be the best lens in low light, but it's sharp enough and combined with a tilt/swivel flash will produce wonderful images.

Personal option is the 24-105. But that is because I like the extra zoom range. But:
  • If you are really interested in image quality, the 24-70.
  • If you shoot in low light, the 24-70/2.8. It is only a stop faster, but sometimes that 1 stop makes a difference.
Check the weight of the 2 lenses. An all day carry with a HEAVY lens can wear you down to the point that you stop shooting. I had to compromise on my travel kit to keep the weight down.

Definitely the 24-70 f/2.8 if you're looking for a super versatile lens (a lot of people recommend this as your first lens). The only reason I'd get the 24-105 f/4 would be because of the range it offers. If you know you'll be shooting in low light situations then the 24-105 f/4 can't help you very much, where as the 24-70 f/2.8 let's in a lot more light and can really help capture images when there isn't that much light present. Overall the 24-70 f/2.8 is the way to go but if you want to save some cash the 24-105 f/4 won't disappoint.
Note: If you know you won't be shooting in low light that much, I think you'd be better off purchasing the 24-105 f/4 and saving some cash.

you really can't go wrong with either. obviously the 24-70 stops all the way down to 2.8 so you'll get better bokeh for portraits/product photography/etc. but the 24-105 is considerably cheaper and gives you a bit more range. depends what you want to prioritize!
