I despise brightness modes. Can I just once get a high quality LED flashlight with a tail cap button that just goes on and off? I hate reaching for my light and having to flip through 3 modes only to pass high and have to flip through them again. If I want 5 lumens I'll use my cellphone light.

ryfish5The problem is that once you go past about 150+ lumens, it tends to become too bright for any close up work. The modes are necessary simply to have it usable in as many situations as possible.
Some lights with programmable UI(such as those funded by BLF) will allow you to use the light with a single mode.

guvnorAnd yet necessary is a really a subjective term in this case. Not particularly necessary for everyone.

ryfish5There's a plethora of flashlights for your needs out there, no doubt. I personally don't mind brightness modes, as it ensures I don't have to use more battery than necessary.

ryfish5foursevens lights have different programming modes you can choose from, one of which is high only. they were recently acquired by dark sucks - i personally wouldn’t get one because i hate friction fit clips, but this is supposed to be a good light: https://darksucks.com/collections/foursevens/products/mini-mk-ii?variant=1552714760217
if youre looking for something a little bigger - i carry an mmr-x in my ruck and i really like it

guvnorI have to agree with ryfish, if I need my flashlight NOW I am almost never going to need it NOW and be doing delicate, close up, work. I need a flood of light and if it is to bright i will put a diffuser between the lens and the thing I am working on. Delicate work and ECD don't mix of any usecase I can think of, if I need to work on something I have time to work around the issues I face in the situation. If I need 5 lumens more than ambient I have a tshirt to dampen the beam, much safer than having it boot to 5 lumens and fumbling to get to the 'all the lumens' mode when I am in a critical IFF or Search and Rescue situation
