Is there usually an audible different between balanced and unbalanced other than volume if electrical interference isn't a factor?

ascorbylThis depends on a number of factors, but yes, it can make a dramatic difference.
Balanced headphone amplifiers and many speaker amplifiers operate in a "Push/Pull" mode where each channel has two amplifier stages, one for the positive and a separate negative, which is 180º out of phase. This not only separates the "ground" for each channel, but while one side is "pushing" the other side is "pulling" so that the amplifier maintains better control over the speaker diaphram.
These two factors can provide tighter bass, crisper highs, better left/right separation, and more open or better defined imaging. There is more benefit than just noise cancellation.
