I have been making quilt tops for a number of years. I almost always send them out to be quilted. Using different fabrics does make a difference in the quilts, esp. if you are using cheaper quality fabrics. Years ago the baby quilts I made w/ the cheaper quality fabrics just did not hold up to the numerous washings. I almost always use 100% cotton but occasionally have used other fabrics. Some are a little slippery and hard to control. I like using the soft ‘minky’ fabric for the backing. The quilting pattern shows up really well on it and it is so soft.

AnneRightlerBeginners should NOT use Minky....it's hard to handle, very difficult to quilt.

WintersewistLike I said, my quilts are almost always sent out to a longarm quilter and they have had no problems with Minky. I think if I was doing it on my home machine or hand quilting I would agree, Minky would be difficult...too thick.
