Early on in learning to quilt, Lisa Berentsen of Quilters Thread taught me that sewing with a quarter inch seam is of the utmost importance for precision. Being off even by a thread width of the fabric on each seam over the course of a row adds up to being off by quite a bit when trying to match seams and points. What is the safest and most stable way to mark where my "true" quarter inch seam is on a computerized sewing machine?

miketa87All makers of sewing machines sell a 1/4” foot for your machine, it’s priceless! In a pinch measure, measure where a 1/4” would be and stack a few strips of blue tape or post-its as a guide for the edge of your fabric.

miketa87If you have stitch width settings, use a piece of paper and, on each width setting, put your needle down through the paper. Remove the paper and use a ruler to measure each hole in the paper (from the edge of the paper) to determine which setting gives you that perfect "scant quarter" that best. On my machine, an inexpensive Brother, the stitch width of 6.0 is my perfect quarter-inch seam allowance. Hope this helps.

miketa87p.s. good advice from Lisa, cut several smallish scrap strips of fabric, measure the lengths and practice sewing your 1/4” seam...after sewing, open, press and remeasure...if you were accurate it should be the original length minus 1/2”. Also, sewing a scant 1/4” is best as you lose a few threads in the fold when you open the two pieces.

busybee17Even with a quarter inch foot, *always* double check to make sure you have that PERFECT quarter inch seam. You still might not get the much needed quarter inch seam, even with one of those feet.

brenda52411Thank you for the advice! I did have a quarter inch foot for rack of my machines, but find they are not consistent either!

miketa87I use a seam guide with my piecing foot to get that scant 1/4 seam right. Here’s a YouTube link to see how it works: https://youtu.be/-04idswIN5g
