It looks like the question is what is a good project for a beginner? A long time ago(when I was in grade school) before rotary cutters , my mentor taught me by having me do a Roman stripe. That meant I had to learn to cut 1 1/2 inch wide strips and sew them together in groups of 3. Then cut into 3 1/2 inch lengths and sew the squares alternately horizontal and vertical direction. This helped me practice precision cutting and sewing as well as color placement and let me use good quality cotton with high thread counts left from others more advanced projects (or high quality remnants). I use this pattern to teach new quilters piecing skills. For quilting itself this pattern is forgiving of beginner hand stitching.

WintersewistI was just saying how I learned. I teach people with what they already have available to them. If they have a rotary cutter then we use that. If they only have scissors then we use that. The simplest thing to do when there are few resources is to use what is available.
