There's one type of paper piecing that is getting a lot of little pieces of paper, sewing fabric onto them, and then sewing all of them together. Then there's another type of paper piecing that is getting a piece of paper with lines on it and sewing multiple pieces of fabric to that one sheet of paper. My question is which is which and what's your favorite?

HilarykrI think that the first one is English paper piecing and the second is foundation paper piecing. English paper piecing uses paper to create a finished edge piece to sew together with another little finished edge piece. Foundation piecing is more like regular piecing in that raw edges are contained in seams as each new fabric is added. It is called foundation because you are using the paper as the foundation for the fabric as you continue to add to the block (or part of one). I'm not a big fan of hand sewing, so I'm partial to foundation paper piecing because I can do it on the machine.

propswifeI do both English Paper Piecing (EPP) and paper piecing. EPP is indeed the 1st one. takes time, but nice to have portable projects, I mainly do them when involved in something else, like meetings, travel, etc. with the understanding going in that any EPP project I have is a "long-term" project. Paper piecing I love - results are so nice. Takes a little bit to get swing of it. Ginger Rogers danced backwards and in high heels -- paper piecing is kind of like that. You are sewing on the opposite side of the the fabric from where you have your fabric, and the block will be reversed in directionality when you get done. but it really makes a nice finished project.
