What thread do you use? I've been quilting with polyester for years but recently read that over time it cuts through the fabric.

sjkissellI just use cotton thread. Mostly because that was what was recommended during my first class.

sjkissellPoly causes less lint. I use both cotton and poly, depending on the project.

sjkissellI like Aurifil for piecing and quilting, either 40 or 50 weight, and Superior Bottom Line for hand-piecing.

sjkissellDepending on the project, I have used 100% cotton threads, poly/cotton blends, or poly thread. I use rayon for applique. The cotton and poly are super strong and will last. Rayon is more decorative and not for piecing or final quilting for quilts that are to be used and not just hung and looked at. I have never had an issue with the poly cutting through fabric, and I like it because it is far less linty. When I use cotton thread, my machine gets really dirty and needs much more frequent cleaning.

sjkissellThe rule of thumb is generally to match your thread to your fabric...cotton thread for cotton fabric, polyester thread for polyester fabric, etc. There are always exceptions, but this is an excellent general rule to remember.

sjkissellI have found that thread from Superior Threads that they marked recommended for quilting never fails, also Aurofil. I also love Glide. I hesitate buying thread from big box stores.

timi45I do NOT recommend Connecting Threads thread. Granted it is inexpensive but it's also extremely linty! Extremely!!! I've not had a problem with any other brand as far as lint goes and it can wear on your machine. I use 100% cotton for quilting.

wrkrbe1On the contrary, I don’t find Connecting Threads Essential thread very linty at all. I’ve used other, more expensive brands and was shocked at the amount of lint produced. I also like the small spindle they use to wind the thread (1200 yds.) making the spools smaller than some other brands.

timi45I will NOT buy thread (or fabric) from big box stores. It's a case of "you get what you pay for".... I've just had too many bad situations...

wrkrbe1I have heard people go both ways on the CT thread. Have you tried their fabric? I bought a few kits from them, only to find the fabric way too thin (looked like VERY cheap fabric). I bought 4 patriotic kits that SHOULD have been all the same, including fabric... all kits were different, and pieces of fabric ALL looked like someone went through their sewing room and cleaned it out. I had triangular shaped pieces, small scraps, multiple small scraps of the same fabric to make 1/3 yard, when the pattern called for 1/3 yard, etc... pretty strange. I'm gun shy of that shop now. Spent too much money only to be disappointed.

brenda52411I, too, do not buy fabric from Connecting Threads. I also stay away from fabric at JoAnn’s and Hobby Lobby. I’ve been wondering about Craftsy’s own brands of fabric. I’d like to hear from anyone regarding fabric quality. Thanks.

sjkissellI, too, have heard this about polyester thread, so I try to use only cotton. My problem is I like to use the pre-wound bobbins and some of those are polyester.

CurleyKatI’ve wondered about Craftsy too. I’ve gotten Kaffe Fassett fabric and RJR, but their own brands are questionable. I bought one fat quarter bundle of their fabric and found it lacking. I, too, won’t buy fabric at big box stores. I work hard to do the very best I can to construct my quilts and choose not to use inferior products. Quilt shops...brick & mortar and online, that sell name brand fabrics, are my source.

brenda52411I hope you see this post. Please call or email CT about the issues you had. They are really good about making things right. I bought several pre-cuts and a few of the pieces in them were cut badly and very off. I contacted them and they replaced it. The solid fabric is absolutely terrrrrible though and I would personally not recommend it at all!! It is literally se e through and very very cheap. When ordering printed fabric from them it is so nice that you can buy matching solids but unfortunately it is extremely cheaply made.

CurleyKatI have bought fabric from Craftsy often and loved it. I found it every bit as good as quilt stores. I also rarely but fabric from big box stores. If I do, I inspect it carefully to make sure it isn't thin, stiff, or loosely woven.

MadCrafterMadCrafter, I did see this. It's been too long ago, now, to call CT to complain. I actually hadn't ever thought of it, but I sure should have. It honestly looked like a bunch of ladies had cleaned up their sewing rooms, to create these kits. The quality of their fabric, at least the fabric that I ended up with, leaves a LOT to be desired. I have purchased from Craftsy, and have been happy with their fabric, but on the other hand, I always buy "known names" when I buy from Craftsy. I am guessing all of their fabric would be okay, but CT has taught me a lesson. (An EXPENSIVE lesson.) I actually do have access to wholesale pricing for Moda fabrics, including Bella solids. That's what I will do from here on, for solids. (If you are interested, let me know.)
