I am a very amateur quilter . In the past two years, i have completed two lapquilts of my own design of colors . My first quilt was an OHIO STAR pattern and everyone looks at it and says a "you picked ohio star for your first quilt ? Are you Crazy?. I guess i am but that is what i made for my first quilt . The second one was of the Attic Window design and i was proud that i was able to finish that in time for my sister's 80th birthday. I started quilting as something to try. I am self taught using online videos and one of Fons and Porter's Guide to Quilting books. I enjoy going to quilt shows and i have been to the Vermont Quilt Festival in Essex Junction , Vermont two years and the Maine Quilt show last year. i photograph as many quilts as I can in the time i have to attend these shows. i got some good ideas and help at the Vermont show this year to work on my third quilt . l like is said i am a beginner compared to many of you out there but it is fun and relaxing even when i make mistakes . LOL.

LiwilliamsThank you , my sister's friends in Florida all say to her " Your BROTHER made this quilt!!!!???" My sister likes seagulls and I was able to find that fabric at a store in Center Harbor, New Hampshire called Keepsake Quilting. I also found the seashell fabric there. I had been working on a different quilt for her with seagulls, but i bit off more than i could chew (or stand ) as the attic windows were only 2 inches. I dumped that fabric into a box and started on the one shown in the photos. I should mention although most people who have been quilting for a while probably already know that you should place a label somewhere on the quilt (usually the back) with at least your name and the year that you made the quilt. If the quilts do make it through the generations, at least the inheritors of the quilts will know who made them. I am working on a quilt at the moment that will be a "memory quilt " . in the middle of the quilt are a reconstructed U S ARMY flag that i had to cut the embroidery out of a flag and resew them onto a new backing . Below that flag is a Regiment flag of the United States National Guard of New Hampshire . Surrounding those two flags are strips of Khaki Army olive drab as the outsid border , the inner strips are composed of Digital Army Camouflage and another border strip of Army Equipment , Desert Camouflage, and a fabric that has USA and the American Flag in an antique finish. The Deser Camouflage, and the Digital Army Camouflage was taken from old uniforms that the person had worn in IRAQ and Kuwait. There will be two pockets on the upper part of the quilt that will have ARMY on pocket and the persons name on the other pocket . I will also be sewing on his rank patch , a shoulder American Flag patch and his Battalion insignia . I had promised him this quilt a year ago but circumstances beyond my control prevented me from making the quilt. It also is a full 85 by 90 quilt and i have not made one like this ever before . When i finish it , I will post it here and on my Facebook page. Wish me luck in finishing it !!!!!

NHRICHARDThose are absolutely gorgeous.. I'm floored that you did the Ohio star as well...I picked the log cabin for my first but had to make it difficult by using thinner strips of fabric instead of going thicker with less. Then I got sidetracked and started another for a mother's day gift and that one was pretty intense..I free motioned the whole top and tied silver seed beads in with invisible thread. It turned out amazing..I want to do one like yours with the windows...I just love yours! I love seeing people's ideas and fabric choices as well... such beautiful artwork in quilting! :)

NHRICHARDGood job. Ohio Star is a little tricky for a beginner. However you learn a lot of the basics with it that are used in other quilts. Great job. I have been quilting for years and still learn new techniques. Take some classes. Even if you don't think you will like the technique, you will find that out without a lot of extra expense, meet people and learn some good tips. I have been to the Vermont Show years ago. I enjoyed it. I take lots of photos too at shows.
