A dress watch has :
2 or 3 hands Modesty in size, i.e., thin and <38mm No date & no other complications No lume A leather strap A simple, uncluttered dial & a clean bezel.
So, no that Sub isn't a dress watch & neither is that Speedy -- even if you wear them to work on Wall Street. The idea is that the watch should not call attention to itself.

BarutanseijinOh, I don't know. The cowboy who flies in from Wyoming for a wedding wearing a 3-piece suit, his best Stetson cowboy hat, hand-tooled boots, and hand-made silver and turquoise bolo tie would be perfectly matched with a Rolex Daytona chrono that had a hand-made silver-turquoise bracelet. Personal style and the personality to match go a long way.

BF_HammerCousin Otto, the professional clown, attends the same wedding. In costume. Also wearing a Daytona.
Works for him, too.

BarutanseijinThis is a very good definition. Thanks! The “dress watch” is the kind of watch you would wear to match a dress or formal attire. The fact that one decides to show up to a formal event in costume or ethnic wear invalidates the need for a dress watch.

BarutanseijinYour listing of < 38mm diameter as a requirement is very interesting. I bought the Travisleon Heirloom as a dress watch https://www.massdrop.com/buy/travisleon-heirloom-watch. It is a wonderful watch, but there is something about it that is not quite right in my mind but I can’t put my finger on. It checks off every item on your list except the diameter - 40mm. I think that’s it!

BarutanseijinAgreed with everything you said! I would also add that dial should match time of day ie: morning or day time event = white or light colored dial, evening event dark blue or black dial.
Also NO ARABICS, Roman numerals are acceptable but not preferred.

BarutanseijinNo date on a dress watch is an important point. Preferably two hands but three hands or two hands with a small seconds dial is fine. Discrete smaller sizes are the norm. 38mm or less is a good guide. A black leather strap is a must.
Junghans Max Bill Automatic, Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso, and Lange Saxonia are three good and varied examples.

A date makes it a business watch. Other complications like day/date display, annual calendar, moon phases, second time zone, et al, are all business tools.
A dress watch case can be steel or a precious metal. As an aside, formal attire traditionally required the absence of a watch. It was considered gauche to glance at one at a social event.
