New Canadian Knife Customs Restrictions

more_vert
Anyone in Canada has had knives seized by customs when importing from abroad? It seems that the law has changed in February 2018.
See this external post for a more thorough explanation: https://gearjunkie.com/canada-knife-law-prohibited-folding-weapons
Anyone has meaningful information or first hand experience with these sweeping changes?

Site I’ve used in past I think got busted or not rememberring it properly. Guy was a testy one. I have collection of OTFs. They are all pretty simple designs and the fear of them is just wrong. A sheet of paper will stop deployment so belief it’s a weapon you could press into one’s side and deploy it o inflict harm is wrong. They are no more dangerous than a steak knife. It takes certain effort to deploy so kids won’t be able to, he’ll my girlfriend couldn’t do it. I don’t carry and it’s easy to just take apart of disengage the spring and lock in case so it’s non functional and perfectly legal. If another site will do the shipping disassembled request please pass it my way. I know of one company that loved the concept but it will be a while saving for my Deadlock. Gavin is waiting for me to be ginea pig for him.

Yeah but good luck finding a willing seller that will disassemble a knife so you can "legally" import it. The idea alone is enough to sketch out most legit dealers let alone the warranty implications and general hassle.

You can order OTF's and auto side openers and have them shipped here without restrictions IF: 1) The blade is shipped separately from the handle.
It is not illegal/contraband or prohibited to order a blade blank, regardless of length. CBSA must prove intent to assemble and create a illegal/prohibited item. Also, It is not illegal/contraband or prohibited to order a handle, regardless of mechanical nature. It is however, illegal to combine the 2 components to make a functioning OTF or auto side opener. This is the reason to have the items shipped separately, shipped together there is greater intent to assemble the components. My BF makes Italian Swing Guard Autos from kits, but does not install the spring, he gives it to you separately, there is the possibility that it can be considered a gravity/flick opener and consequently illegal here in Canada. Auto side openers should never be stored closed, this will over time reduce the spring tension or it can break. Best to have a design that the spring and be easily removed or replaced, otherwise the whole knife has to be disassembled for a repair. The Russian designed Mikov is a good example.
