New to photography and I'm eying a used a7ii body only for 900$. At first I thought it was a good deal but looking at all the Lenses they cost almost the same amount as the camera used, and some New. Should I just go for the a6000 and a extra lens for the same price as the used a7ii?

AMDloverGenerally speaking, lenses will matter more than your camera body. I'm not a Sony shooter, so I don't know the benefits of the a7ii over the a6000, but to my knowledge they are both pretty good bodies and I would think you'd be happier with having an extra lens which will allow you to be more versatile.

AMDloverI made the switch to sony about 3 years ago and I started with the a6000 while it’s a great camera I did a lot more video and moved to the a7. The benefits other than the full senor is the larger body (little better grip) the ability to have a real battery grip and the most important part of video, a microphone input. the a7ii takes everything that is great about its older brother and improves it. The video has been upgraded, the body is slightly more rugged and weather resistant and the button placement is a little better. a big thing about the a7ii is the in body stabilization. Allowing you to stop down a lot lower than you would usually be able to handheld. Plus you are still able to use a great metabones adapter to use lenses from Canon or any other choice I have. if you are just starting out the 24-70 (f4.0) is a great versatile lenses paired with a 50mm (f1.8). That’s a good start for portrait photography. Rokinon has just released a set of FE lenses that are actually AF now which is awesome. I love there glass, top quality for a great price. Any other questions ask away I’ve been using Sony for a good amount of time now.

highlysuspectI think the main benefit is that the a7ii is a full frame camera while the a6000 is not. Even though the full frame camera would suit me better for the things I'd like to do, I'd prefer the a6000 due to the lower cost of the lenses and the cameras. Thanks for the reply!

pr3sidentcarterSo would the A7ii be a better bet? And if I buy the a6000 should I buy the body only or can I buy that 16-50mm lens it comes with?
I mainly wanna mess with Low Light and City Photography

AMDloverWith the full frame sensor and in body stabilization (paired with stabilization in lenses) your best bet would be the a7ii. I would grab the kit 24-70 (f4) or even the 28-70 (3.5-5.6) both of those are great but obviously the forst would be better with the constant f4. I chose those because during street photography 35/50 is usually what people like to use but if you want to shoot the cityscape in general you get a lot of information in with the 24 or even 28mm.
if you get the a6000 you might as well get it with the kit. You’ll be surprised if the photos you get but it won’t be as good as the ones you can get with the full frame. Below is a pano I did of San Diego with the 28-70 Shot with the a7

AMDloverLow Light a7ii would be better, but if your budget is tighter A6000 is an awesome all-rounder that will last you for a long long time and is great for all types of shots.

AMDloverI don't see anyone mentioning the A5100 which is essentially an A6000 but no Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). That makes is a little cheaper than the A6000 even, and then you can buy some good Sony glass. For the extra features though, A7ii is great. IBIS and being full-frame are great for handheld and wide angle or getting a lot more detail vs some crop sensors. I'd lean more towards the A7ii and buy one nice zoom to start with, and as someone else said, Rokinon makes decent lenses on a budget. I shoot on a D3400 and sometimes I wish I had a better body for easier shortcuts to change settings or that little bit of extra width or quality to a picture, though modern sensors are all great even in poor light.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

AMDloverYou're new to photography: grab the a6000. It's got everything you need to get started. The EVF is incredible, it shoots beautiful video, and, very important, you're not throwing down as much cash to check out the Sony system while picking up a fantastic piece of hardware.
The kit lens is just ok. I saved my pennies and got the Sony 35mm <https://www.sony.com/electronics/camera-lenses/sel35f18>. It takes advantage of the a6000 like nothing else will. Totally worth the price and you can usually find it on sale somewhere or grab it used from someone reputable.
There's also the world of analog lenses. I've got 80s Canon lenses, weird Soviet-era lenses, all kinds of lenses from everywhere. You grab an adapter for it and you go.
I started with the NEX 6, moved to an a6000, and have settled on shooting with an a6300. The thought of upgrading to a newer Sony surfaces occasionally, but there's really no need. Start with an a-series and decide if you like the system. The a7s are monsters, but you don't need to blow the cash on semi-pro to pro gear yet.

Check out the detail and crispness. https://flic.kr/p/LQXh3p Look at how well the 35mm catches the details in the hat and the person's facial hair. https://www.flickr.com/photos/artofmulata/32140988596/ Shot this at night under a street lamp by hand. The low light prowess and the lens' built-in stabilization are reason enough to own the combo.

AMDloverThanks! Whatever you get, give it time to settle. Shoot every day no matter and don't worry about 'getting the shot.' It's supposed to be fun! If you never leave home without the camera and shoot daily you'll learn more than you ever believed possible in a reasonable amount of time.
