Women's Watches

more_vert
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all had a great Easter.
This question is a personal one, so it may not interest everybody here.
My anniversary is coming up. I would love to get my lady a watch, preferably an automatic.
Frankly I know nothing about women's watches. I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations?
Cheers.
Gun.

In case you are still looking for a women’s watch for your wife, this is what my wife’s Longines looks like

Mido has a great ladies' line, I especially love it since they tend to stray away from the gaudy diamond encrusted aesthetic that a lot of women's watches gravitate towards.
I think the majority of their mechanical ladies' watches hover at or under the $1k range. Realistically, I'd say there isn't so much to "know" about women's watches, what makes a good watch a good watch is unisex. In addition, if your lady could pull it off, perhaps a smaller men's watch could work as well?
Example of some Mido's: https://us.shopmido.com/mido-collection/baroncelli.html?gender=131

I had my better half try on several of my watches and asked what she thought about them (case size, thickness, etc.). I talked about what I liked most about certain models to try to make it seem like we were simply discussing my watches. She may have suspected or known that I was mining for information, but I'll never know. She had mentioned she always wanted a watch with an open heart dial after seeing some in a store, so that part was easy. I was able to narrow my search criteria to an open heart dial, exhibition case back, case diameter w/o the crown of 35mm or less, thickness of 11mm or less, and preferably silver in color (because I know she has an affinity for silver).
I ended up getting the Seiko Lukia SSVM012 and swapped out the stock strap for a brown Hirsch strap (I thought it looked better with a brown strap). I gave it to her with the stock strap and a spare black Hirsch strap included in case she wanted to change the strap based on preference, outfit, occasion, etc.

eksuenThe first mechanical watch that I gave my wife was almost the same one, the Seiko Lukia SSVM032, which was a limited edition Lukia from last year that had a cherry blossom theme, light pink strap, pink mother of pearl face, open heart, a display back with cherry blossoms on the edge of the back crystal. She likes the deployant clasp for the leather strap.

My wife recently got a Longines Master Collection watch, and really likes it. It is a smaller 26mm case with a timeless look to it. It has an exhibition case back with a modified ETA movement.
After a month in, she is still enjoying the automatic movement and the sweeping second hand.
As the others have said, comes back to budget and preference. Shopping for ladies watches is harder, IMO.

bmackay159I totally agree that shopping for ladies watches is much harder. Suddenly the size, bracelet style etc become much more important.
I quite like the Longines watches. Some of them are actually quite classy looking. I would like to get her something a little more mature and elegant than a DW fashion watch.

honeybeeI had the same trouble but then I looked at Tag H and they have nice woman watches in classy but sporty! I had to get her a mesh band . Their so picky ! I spent a lot of time , much more then when I pick a watch , but could someone get me a watch I like , don’t think so , she’s not allowed to by me watches, lol
First question - what is your price range?
Re: @Cloaca 's comment it is hard to tell quartz versus automatic. I gave my better half a mechanical watch this past year and it seems to be the most worn since she received it and it gave me a chance to explain to her the working of it and why she needs to wind it on occasion. I'll take any opportunity I can to talk about watches!
The mechanical piece I referenced above is this one. I went white face and got her a pink patent leather strap to go with it, she loves it and you come in well under budget.

Michele makes a wide range of time pieces, some with stones, some without, many in your price range (and well below). I've gifted a couple of the white ceramic models in the past and they have always gone over well.
I know Shinola is not popular amongst many in the watch community, but my GF loves hers - she has three of them, two of which were gifts from me and she liked them so much she bought her own. She has caught the watch bug!
For example - https://www.shinola.com/willard?lug=16mm#/willard?case=6531&strap=3056
*that link is busted. Check out their 34mm or 36mm cases. The 36 in particular - the mother of pearl or the coin edge/gold one.

I second the Merci and Shinola, they are both attractive watches. Shinola has tons and tons of customization options, and they do look the part.
There are a ton of solid options in the Swatch Group from Hamilton, Mido, Rado that you can test drive at a jeweler.
We know there will be a Seiko 'cocktail time' in 34 mm. Given how popular that watch is in the 40.5 mm size, i'd be surprised if it weren't available globally sometime this year. Not much info on it yet and might be too late for your gift. https://www.plus9time.com/blog/2018/3/24/baselworld-2018-releases-presage-cocktail-time-for-women
And Oris has some interesting watches coming soon too! I read somewhere a suggestion of matching watches for anniversaries/gifts in 40 mm and 36 mm.
Oris Big Crown Date Pointer (https://timeandtidewatches.com/introducing-the-oris-big-crown-pointer-date-in-blue-and-the-brand-new-36mm-version-available-in-both-steel-and-bronze/) Oris Diver 65 Bronze (https://timeandtidewatches.com/introducing-oris-divers-sixty-five-bi-colour-bronze-steel-option-40mm-36mm/)

My wife has a midsize Rolex that she absolutely loves. I’ll take a picture and upload it. The Cartier Tank is also a beautiful watch, but the watch she wears most is a $10 Timex. It’s a very loud ticker though.
If I had to buy another watch for my wife, I’d go with a Men’s vintage Omega. They are usually 34-35mm and there are so many different models that it should be easy to find one that suits your wife’s style.

PMJ1999I don't think my wife would appreciate me buying a Rolex at the moment, our business is still growing so we are keeping liquid cash in case a crisis comes (which is entirely possible with questionable politicians in charge at the moment).
I'm thinking of spending something around $1-1.5k. I shall have a look at Omega thanks.

The only thing I would say, after giving my wife two automatics in a row, is that she seems mildly annoyed that they require winding/setting/constant wearing to work.
I think that it's probably fair to say that little machines are of more interest to males than to females, who tend (statistical distribution, many exceptions ... obligatory Damore warning) to be more interested in how watches look as jewelry than in how they work.
The Swiss rectangle thing here in a current drop, a quartz, would be an option if I were looking for something for my wife now, whereas a year ago it wouldn't have been.

CloacaI will have to ask my wife whether she will be wearing the watch everyday. Otherwise an automatic would become a nuisance for her.
I very much agree that women tend to attend more to the look rather than the technicality of a watch. I think guys tend to like watches that are more robust and practical.

honeybeeI can't recommend anything in your price range, but I can second @Cloaca's sentiment. I gave my wife an automatic, she will only wear it so that I won't feel bad.
Her favorite watch is a Seiko solar I got her a while back. Her words, "I only have to set the watch twice, for daylight saving time., and I don't have to worry about the time being incorrect."
Another concern for her is size. She prefers the 25mm-27mm size.
I have been eyeing something like this for when I can afford it: https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-constellation-constellation-quartz-24-mm-12310246055004. I have seen them grey market and used around $1k.
I just came across this Seiko, I think it looks beautiful: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IC77Q2W/?coliid=I3GWNN6KEYARQA&colid=1TPOFFS1BTJ7B&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
