As some other people have mentioned, Board Game Geek tends to favor more complex/heavy and legacy games in their rankings, and if you're just getting started and don't have a consistent/experienced group to play with, something like Terra Mystica or Through the Ages might be a bit too much. In my experience, games in the 2-3 complexity range (using BGG's scale) are fairly easy to pick up and still offer a lot of strategy and replayability. Some of my favorites in no particular order: Catan 7 Wonders Boss Monster Cytosis Ticket to Ride Europe Betrayal at the House on the Hill King of Tokyo (or New York) La Strada Carcassone Pandemic
