Sennheiser HD630VB
It has a passive tone control for bass (VB means variable bass) but I just found a setting that works for me and set it. I’m hoping the HD6xx sound like an open version of my 630s.

AsheikmI got a great deal on a floor demo but I’d have paid a fair bit more and been happy. They don’t seem too popular (probably because of the MSRP of 500$US plus people probably find the variable bass feature gimmicky). The VB has no active electronics and can be set to a neutral point (like a tone control on a stereo). The sound is not gimmicky. I need closed back phones for the library and archive work I do. Looking forward to the HD6xx (my first open back phones) for home use.

OvationNice! As I understand it, loudspeaker design has two primary concerns: 1) driver response, and 2) enclosure response. Electronics relate to tuning driver response. Enclosure response is tuned by the volume of the enclosure and/or addition of ports (there are also other designs, like transmission lines). I assume the VB adjustment in this headphone is changing the volume of the enclosure (to remain sealed). The driver's ability to move is dependent on enclosure volume and will affect the sound reproduction; especially noticeable in the lower frequencies where driver excursion is greater.

AsheikmI'm not sure how the mechanism works (I'm an historian, not an electrical engineer), but they were part of at least one drop. You can learn more about them here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/sennheiser-hd630vb
In any case, I'm very happy with them (though they are a bit bulky to carry around--good case for doing so, nice and sturdy, but a bit big).
