ELI5: Why are so many keycaps not transparent?

more_vert
I'm confused on why aren't more keycap sets, especially those that aren't artisan, transparent/translucent? I've just started into keyboards (purchased a Masterkeys Pro M; just bought a few aftermarket keycaps for it) and I'm really sad that so many of the drops on Massdrop aren't backlit :(

The short answer is that GMK and SP are a couple of the largest manufacturers of the custom sets you see here (like Pulse currently) and they don't make shine-through keycaps. With the way their current manufacturing process works, doubleshot keycaps with trasparent legends aren't really feasible, but there are other manufacturers like Tai-Hao that reproduce popular color schemes in a standard profile with translucent legends. Their sets are sometimes available here, but can also be found on other sites like aliexpress, amazon, and mechanicalkeyboards.com
I guess I was just thinkig since they do mold with translucent material on occasion, maybe they could use it as just the legend material on double-shot keycaps. But other than a few caps in SA Pulse’s Novelties kit - not yet produced - I’ve never seen them do it.

dvorcolSA camping also had a translucent novelty cap, but I think the legend was printed on that one.
