Favorite Profile (and Why?)

more_vert
I just got into keyboards on a serious non-gaming level in the past 6 months, and it's been a lot to learn! Lately, I've been focused on profile. I'd not really paid any attention to anything other than the colorways and such, and the fact that DSA is flat (found out I was wrong about that), and that SA was always per row (found out I was wrong about that).
For myself, I've begun to hate sculptured of any type. My experiences with that were trying to get Modern Selectric to fit a JD45. That was an exercise in frustration. After that, I like SA for the looks (though the height does limit), and for function DSA, though I do like the uniform R3 Dangerzone, but most appear not to be inclined that way when making SA keysets.
I waffled on Chocolatier for a while, but the fact that it was sculptured SA (and the long lead time) led me to pass (I'm sure that will be a regret later).
What are others' favorite profile for look and for use? Any assumptions that I have made that are wrong?

I prefer DSA or SA uniform row 3, but I think this is due to a lot of my keyboard use is for gaming. I find that my typing speed goes up with a sculpted set so for me it's having the right board for the right situation.

as a Dvorak user I am kind of stuck with SigPlastics profiles since I can move them around. DSA seams OK, I really want to try SA though. I may buy some just to see what it is like.

I really want some DSA or SA keycaps, for the nostalgia. I can get the regular ones anywhere but it is hard to find the DSA for some reason.

I think its important to note that the angle of the keyboard will affect how the sculpted profiles feel. Some profiles will feel much more comfortable at 11 or 8 degrees rather than with a flat keyboard. I like to try out different profiles and sets on my keyboards since they affect the way the switch feels also and just stick with what works best on a particular board like @xtianyves said, but generally I prefer cherry profile.

I think you'll need to spend a lot of time using the different profiles to see where your preferences lie and a lot of it will also come down to how you use the keyboard.
I've gone through the whole gamut of options from DSA to sculpted SA, uniform SA and come back full-circle to OEM because I primarily use my keyboard for a lot of writing, coding (web dev.) and playing games on a 60% Pok3r.
DSA is great if you use Colemak or Dvorak and fun to use but I personally don't like the texture of the keys and the flatness of the keycaps makes me prone to more typos than with an OEM profile.
Both sculpted SA and uniform SA profiles look great on a keyboard however are not all that comfortable for sustained periods of typing or writing code with. Ditto when playing games on the PC. The tall and thick nature of SA keycaps also means slightly more actuation force and is probably why I didn't end up liking them all that much in the end.
I've gone back to an OEM profile on my Pok3r with Clear MX switches and have installed thick rubber O-rings on the caps. The feel is so much nicer and I'm probably going to try Zealios with another 60% down the road.
Spend an extended amount of time with the different profiles -- you might be surprised what you end up liking/disliking. In an ideal world, one could have a different keyboard with preferred switches paired with a profile and keycap set. Of course it's also prohibitively expensive (a fact that isn't lost on me) after having owned countless TKL and 60% keyboards with close to every possible combination of each.
Try, enjoy and post your experience! We all want to hear what you think.
Out of curiosity, besides trying to fit Modern Selectric, why do you now hate sculpted sets?

I love DSA keycaps because of their uniform profiles, and the deep-dish homing patterns. SA seems like far too tall of a profile to use well, but it's all personal preference!

Just found out the perfect combination! Majestouch blues(w/ blue housing) and SA profile. I love the tallness of SA (uniform R3 1976) and the clicky sound gets more clearer and clickier with it. And it's beautiful to look at :)

I have several keycap sets of each profile and enjoy swapping boards all the time, however i do find cherry is the one i keep going back to. it feels and looks better than OEM. DSA is great for gaming, my wrist hurts less with it i find. however i dont like the texture of DSA in ABS.... even though i still keep buying sets in it. i like the smoothness and look of SA, but its very high and in a non sculpted all Row 3 config its harder to type on for me. dcs is just too thin.

For me it depends on other factors. SA feels 'heavy' on Cherry switches, but for some reason, they are great on Gaterons. First row on TKL/fullsized boards feel too far with DSA, but on smaller keyboards without F rows they are extremely comfortable. Cherry profile caps are very nice to type at, but spacebar really hurts my thumbs. Adding palm rest or reversing spacebar fixes the problem.

Cherry profile is in the butter zone for me. OEM is fine, but a bit tall. DSA is a hair too flat. Cherry lets me keep my fingers close to the board and has enough profile that I can feel the edges of the keys and re-center as needed.
