Here's my collection, and contrary to what a previous poster has said, mechanical watches are not going away any time soon.

Chazman1946I think I may have alluded to mechanical watches not being as popular as they once were. My reasoning for making such a statement is based on someone who has several nice quality watches and perhaps one or more are mechanical, meaning they need to be worn to keep the main spring in tension long enough until it’s worn again. Unlike solar watches that can be tucked away in a ‘glass’ top watch case to receive just enough light so it doesn’t stop altogether. Also, solar watches can maintain enough energy for up to several months, without any light if it was fully charged prior to being placed in an unlighted case, drawer or the box it came in. This isn’t the same for mechanical watches that require movement to keep them running. There are watch cases that have constant movable watch ‘pillows’ where your watch is placed and a battery operated mechanical eccentric arm rotates in an elliptical pattern to represent someone wearing it that will keep it running. You can’t get away from batteries even with a mechanical watch if you want it running and ready to go when you are. The issue is, if someone has a large selection of fine watches and only a few are mechanical, chances are one or more of the mechanical watches will run out of tension for the main spring and therefore leads to selecting a watch that doesn’t need anything more than a little light where it’s kept. I’m a Mechanical Engineer and I really gravitate to mechanical stuff, so I have no underlying problem against mechanical watches. However, if these watches were really in vogue why aren’t more of them being offered? The market is too small and it isn’t going to get any better, hence the move to ‘solar’ power, ‘GPS’ or ‘NIST’ radio receptive to maintain the exact time and date, and as Casio has taken the lead to provide all of this in a watch that isn’t going to stop working because a careless passenger accidentally dropped his 100+ lbs. (over stated weight) on your watch while your reaching for your own luggage on the carousel turnstile.

Chazman1946Chazman1946, it appears that we were in Vietnam at the same time. I was in C-Company 2nd Battalion 34th Armor Regiment attached to the 4th Infantry Division. I was in combat during 1966, wounded and sent home in 1967 discharged from Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco.

Sailing40I own several quartz and solar/eco-drive watches, but none of them hold a candle to my mechanicals. The quartz watches may sell more in volume to the masses, but the higher end mechancals get the actual lion's share of the profits. You ask why aren't more mechanicals beng offered? They are, but only those really interested in watches are looking for them, go to any watch forum Watchuseek, Watchfreeks, etc etc, and the interest in mechanicals is 20 fold compared to quartz!
