What pack do you Hikers use?

more_vert
I don't get to do much hiking being in Florida but I have two trips to Cali coming up; and I am saving for a trip to South Africa. Not planning any extreme hiking since I'm a beginner. Right now I'm just trying to plan what to purchase and when for all of the trips budget wise. The camera bag I have is not at all hiking friendly and weighs quite a bit. Do any of you that hike have a suggestion for a bag option? In California I doubt I'll do any tent work just day trips and then make my way back to a hotel. But when I save enough for the trip to South Africa I will hope to do some sleeping out in the wilderness too so a bag that can hopefully take care of both would be great.
My main camera is a Sony A7 so small mirrorless. I plan on bringing just two lenses for the hikes a Macro and a Wide/Ultrawide.
Maybe we could even get a Drop for the pack?

Lots of bags have ample exterior compartments with zippers that could easily accommodate a camera and lens(es) ... I have a gregory z40 which is technically a "smaller" size pack, but I could easily fit 5 days worth of gear in it. It has two compartments, one on top and one on the rear of the bag that will be perfect for my camera system. I also like the insert idea posted at the bottom.

I find it rather inconvenient to have to pull my camera out of my bag intermittently while hiking. I'd rather have my camera readily accessible. The Peak Design Slide and Capture both suit me well for that purpose (their new backpack might be suitable for light hiking, but that remains to be seen since it's still in production). My camera is also weather sealed so I don't need to worry about moisture or dust ruining my camera (not that it rains much here in California). I'd recommend you find a pack that suits your needs first and foremost as a hiker and then try to find ways to adapt it to accommodate carrying a camera, as opposed to finding a camera bag that you can adapt for hiking. For day hikes, I typically use a comfortable pack with enough room (mine is 22L) to carry water, some basic first aid, an additional layer or two, and possibly a light snack or lunch.

I have a small Lowepro to carry a Canon Eos Rebel and lenses. I never use it. You're better off finding padded sleeves for your lenses and just wrapping your camera in a fleece jacket; put it in a pack you'll use more often. If you feel you need a camera bag check out the bagfinder page at Lowepro. http://www.lowepro.com/camera-backpacks. I'd recommend a 50 liter bag for multiple days in the backcountry. If you're travelling light you can get it down to 30 liters.

My best advice I can give is there is 3 pieces of gear where you need to ensure you are shopping at a reputable outdoor store like REI and talk to knowledgeable staff. These are your backpack, Shoes or boots and sleeping bag (although where you will be camping and time of year will guide your bag purchase). Purchase what best fits and try to not shop by price or colour if possible just what fits!

Osprey Exos and Osprey 50 AG They're both great packs, first is my two night and second is my long stay.
The reason I bought them was comfort, durability and weight. You'll have a tough time filling in all those criteria with other packs of their size as most will fall in one area.

Pays_in_BitcoinThis doesn't appear to be have any sort of camera/lens compartments?
RyanFromGDSEI'm not a photographer personally, but my girlfriend and Expédition partner is. She just drops a cheap camera bag insert in the Ospreys.
At first when I suggested she do it years ago she hated the idea and insisted on buying a dedicated camera rucksack for triple the price, that fell to pieces after a few rough climbs. Now she adores a proper bag which is functional for other things.
An insert just like this
