The first pairs of cans which got me into headphones and audio was the audio technica ath-m50x. I still stand by the belief that these are one of the greatest entry level headphones. I have had them for over a year now and I can say they have a very nice sound and are pretty good given the price range. The headphones are slightly towards the warmer side. Highs are crisp and imaging is decent for a closed back headphone. The only problem I could pick out about the sound quality is that the mid range is a tiny tiny bit recessed in the mid range, however this was only noticeable when I compared it to higher end headphones. Overall it has a very nice balance which I enjoy very much for basically any genre of music.
It's a great headphone when it comes to sound quality, however some people have found an issue with the comfort of the ear pads. The ear pads are quite shallow and I can see how they may compress some people's ears. Personally, I've been using a pair of velour replacement pads which are quite soft and comfy, so I can't really comment on the comfort of the stock ear pads.
All in all I would definitely suggest these headphones for someone looking for a sub $200 pair of headphones.
