Just got my Cyrillic IBM 3278 beamspring up and running. It's been fully restored (cleaned, refurbished with new foam and converted to USB). Made a quick typing/solenoid video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Elz9jMpaE

The solenoid sound is awesome, but it's a bit like how BMW now simulates engine noise via the radio.

fibtasticThe solenoid draws power from a small breakout driver board that steps up the voltage from the main USB controller to fire the electromagnet/slug.

Here is a link to the driver if you want to branch off and build a custom board- https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/qdZwUHLH

WOW, that is so awesome. I said "wow" out loud as soon as I heard the switches.

varietyWhat you’re hearing is actually the internal solenoid. It was included because beamsprings came just after selectrics and other typewriters and loud audible feedback was what people were used to. The switches on their own aren’t as loud.
