Soldering

more_vert
I order the Minivan, which is going to be both my first DIY keyboard and my first time soldering anything! AHHH!!
Besides a decent soldering iron, does anyone have any recommendations for practicing before I get it? Perhaps practice kits or something along those lines?

You're only soldering pins. Some cheap perfboard and handful of the cheapest things with pins at your local electronics supply should get you going.
There's some good guides on youtube ranging from the quick (

) to the delightfully detailed (

When I joined the current MiniVan drop, I did not have any soldering experience either. A lot of people say you can practice with other cheap electronics, but I wanted to solder in some switches and LEDs and see them working. So I bought a 8-key macropad kit and assembled it last week. They're not exactly cheap, but I don't see many other alternatives out there and it can be useful if you need that kind of thing. Otherwise, there are cheaper mechanical keyboards out there you could crack open and do all the soldering and desoldering you want.
I have to say though, it only looks intimidating. Not difficult at all when you actually do it.
