Enlightened Equipment Revelation

more_vert
I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on a quilt/bag for light/ultralight hiking and hammock camping. I'd prefer to purchase a unit that can be used for multiple purposes, including car camping, backpacking, and hammock camping, and it seems that the Enlightened Equipment Revelation might be the best option. Any thoughts?

I'm very fortunate to have an EE quilt made of Cuben fibre. Light at 400g. Warm as toast, water resistant, use snow camping and all other camping in combination with Exped UL 70 mat. Unfortunately EE don't do Cuben any more, which is a real shame.

Just an option to consider...
You mentioned both hammock AND ground camping. Ground camping is easy - go with a quilt and pad combo. But for hammock camping, many popular quilts just wont do on their own. The problem with a normal sleeping bag in a hammock is that you compress all the insulation under you and the cold air conducts your heat away. most people fix this with an underquilt but then youre carrying two sleeping bags Ah, no thanks.
Instead, get a large rectangular quilt with a drawstring and zipper closure. Put that on the OUTSIDE of your hammock. Drawstring up the footbox end and then zip up the sides to make a tube. pull it up or push it down like a cocoon to regulate heat. cinch up the head end on colder nights. I use Sea 2 Summit Traveller (40*) in the summer and an EE (Revolt? 10*) Long & Wide in the winter. They work equally well on the ground paired with a pad, or with the hammock.
PS. Sea 2 Summit’s UL hammock with the buckle-webbing things cut off, replaced by amsteel whoopie slings makes a complete ’bed’ at just a tic over 6oz
Pair it with ZPacks Cuben hammock tarp with doors, and Duchwear’s continuous ridgeline for another 13oz and youve got a bombproof ground AND hang shelter system for less than all but the most ultralight single tents.

Go for it. I am so glad I got a quilt. I could never stand mummy sleeping bags and didn't realise this type of option was available until I discovered "Ultra Light"
I've got the Revelation in 20F, 850 Downtek. Get a size longer than you need, and go the "Wide" sizing. Just means you will be super warm and comfortable, really a few grams isn't gonna kill the bank.
I pair it with a Klymit Insulated sleeping pad (go the 23" mass drop model, much wider than the non-insulated one) and use a silk liner bag. Kept pretty warm in the mountains to 0 degrees C camping over the Roar in the New Zealand bush. A high quality insulated pad is a must with quilts, so consider this the other party in the relationship!
I am a side sleeper and with the two elastic bands and plastic clips I was comfortable - with no air coming in from the sides. If anything I was too hot. I think in summer I'd go a 20F bag, as the silk liner bag and insulated pad provide enough heat. Mine has a zipper on the foot, and this works a treat. I use a home made polycryo fly. In bad weather or rain the pad, quilt and liner go in an OR Alpine Bivy bag, which I keep open. Super toasty. Again, if anything, too warm.

I have the Revelation, 0 degree 850 fill. Works great, Have the accompanying UQ also. Love that you can use it with a sleeping pad in a tent with the nylon straps. Awesome item and was just rated best quilt in 2017 by Backpacker.

chris167Thanks for the link, Chris! I saw that on their FB page recently. Pretty cool to see EE getting recognized.

I own two Revelations now, as well as two EE underquilts and a ZPacks twin. All have been used in a variety of ways depending on circumstances - tent, hammock, bunk - and none have disappointed. The down shifts around easier in the ZPack baffles, which can be both a good and bad thing depending on how you adapt to it. It allows you to put the insulation a bit more where you need it, but can also mean fussing with it a bit more too. I think you'd be happy with the Revelation. For hammock sleeping, my experience is that an underquilt is also a necessity in all but the warmest weather.
And...boom! https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-down-quilt (Not sure about the closed footbox though. I usually use closed but like my options.)

seenypaulI have and use an underquilt, even in the summertime (for extra protection against mosquitoes). I've committed to the drop, mostly to decide whether or not I like the footbox design. I can kways pass it on to my kids or wife if I need an alternate footbox. Thanks for your input.

I just got a Revelation (20 degree). It's AMAZING. Blows my Kelty Cosmic out of the water. Way warmer (even though rated to the same temperature), lighter, and more compact. The one thing I don't particularly care for is the slightly plasticy feel of the fabric on bare skin... but I've only slept in it ~5 nights and I'll probably get used to it. It also probably was more annoying because I was sleeping in shorts and no socks (I had a cut on my foot I was trying to air out).

We should do a Mass drop for the EE Revelation 10-degree. I would join right away!

I have an EE Revelation 10-degree and it is amazing. Feathered Friends is actually down the street from me (across the street from the flagship REI). Suffice it to say, I explored my options. Order early, it took almost 6 weeks to get my quilt, but I love it. Probably best piece of gear I own.

Ofletcher72@Ofletcher72 I've been past Feathered Friends thousands of times on the bus and always thought it was a bird products store. I've been to the Flagship REI several times and never once stepped into FF. I know where I'm going next week! I knew Blackrock Gear is on Eastlake. Never been there either. Thanks man. Field trip.

SinfonianThere's also a place called Pro Mountain Sports in the U district. My 2nd favorite piece of gear came from that shop - Slingfin 2Lite tent.

A quilt is good for all those needs, and there are several top-quality quilt manufacturers out there. EE is right up there, and they offer a good value as well. Well regarded cottage shop in the ultralight community. I've bought three quilts from EE (2 for me, 1 for my daughter) and liked them all. I prefer the Enigma over the Revelation, they are identical except that the Enigma has a sewn footbox, which saves a little weight, and the Revelation footbox is closed with a zipper and drawcord that allow you to open it up more like a blanket if you want, that's the trade-off. When you order straight from them you can customize the temp rating, quality of down (=weight), color and fabric choices. Go for it.
